I think the white building is the Foursquare Church Hoss.

If you looking closely I believe you can see the steeple.

The white building at the left center of the original photo is the Villa Bonita.

Lorendoc beat me to it. That's the Hollywood United Methodist church in the background behind the parking lot booth, so we must be behind the Hollywood Hotel.

Murray's Automotive still stands at roughly 3215 City Terrace Drive (although the googlemobile makes it look as though it has been abandoned). Prospect Park is still nestled in a loop at the end of Echandia Street in Brooklyn Heights. I wouldn't be surprised if the other two photos also show east Los Angeles.

Lupe's Tortilla's is still there, On Cesar Chavez just east of Mott. The theater building is also standing. It is a famous building, part Anarchist history as the Flores Magón Brothers visited L.A. in during or prior to the Mexican Revolution. That same building also hosted some very famous Punk bands during that heyday too.

Your image isn't showing up for me, e_r, but I assume that you mean the "C" shaped structure to the left of "Vine" on the 1927 view. I looked through the 1928 CD (the "oddly shaped building" also appears on a 1928 aerial) and found G M McKenzie's auto laundry at 1537 N Vine Street. Do you think that cars went around the curve as they were cleaned? There was also an auto top manufacturer at 1527 N Vine.

Here's a wider comparison view, this time using an aerial from January 2, 1928 on the left. The aerial on the right is still December 22, 1941. I've marked the unbuilt parts of (L to R) Wilcox Avenue, Cole Avenue, Cahuenga Boulevard and Ivar Avenue on the 1928 image. I think Ivar got its kink because they were joining existing streets south of Sunset Boulevard and north of Hollywood Boulevard. In the top-right corner, Yucca Street gets a slight realignment between Ivar and Vine.

Thanks for your work Hoss. Those realignments wiped out a lot of homes and property which of course cost the city millions of dollars in compensation.

I am pretty sure this photo has not been previously posted on NLA, but it would help if you could search "USO" or "U.S.O." along with "Hollywood!"

This Hollywood U.S.O. opened on February 2, 1942, which was eight months prior to the opening of the Hollywood Canteen, 1451 N. Cahuenga Blvd., just South of Sunset Blvd., and the Hollywood U.S.O. relocated eight months after the Canteen opened, to it's second location.

Here's a 1943 photo of the above building. The first Hollywood U.S.O. moved in June, 1943, and it appears this photo was taken after that, as the U.S.O. signs in the color photo are gone.


NoirCityDame posted this 1935 photo of that building from the opposite direction and you can see the door entrance for the U.S.O. She noted that the U.S.O. was on the second floor. (Probably why they moved.) She had later posted some interior shots of the place, but photobucket deleted most of her photos.

This is the photo I believe is new to NLA. It's of the Hollywood U.S.O. at it's new location on Cahuenga Blvd.

The info at the link indicates it was a postcard photo. Date listed as [194-?].

It does not include an address. If am correct in assuming this, it is 1531 Cahuenga Blvd. The current GSV image has one story buildings at this address, though they may not be the same one as in the photo. If you "photo search" the photo I don't find it appearing anywhere else, either.
