I am usually the last person to speak out in favour of bylaws but Houston is just about the only city I know of that could have really benefitted from them. Look at how spread out that skyline is. Height bylaws would have ensured that skyscrapers all get built in the same general area instead of the way you see here-spread out all over the place. If Houston had a denser, more compact downtown, there would be absolutely no argument over which American city has the third best skyline after Chicago and New York. In fact, Houston has so many suburban towers that it might have even given the first two a run for their money!

Regardless, great shots.

^LOL... that photo isn't everything... it really only show's the Galleria, Greenway Plaza and the Allen Pkwy/Kirby area. That still leaves the towers in the Med. Center, and Downtown!

I agree with your first point, but the second is just talking silly now.

Seems like the cities in Texas keep growing and growing and growing. I wish St. Louis could borrow just a little of that kind of growth. Houston looks really urban in these photos. I've been to Dallas (very burbish), but Houston looks a lot more urban. Is it comparable to Dallas?

SLO Jan 27, 2009 4:50 AM

^^Houston feels very similar a bit bigger, but Dallas has multiple skylines too spread through the suburbs/galleria/Las Colinas, and then Fort Worth is not far 30miles or so. The difference between downtown Dallas and Houston is probably 2-3 tall towers.

Houston has more towers and more urban than Dallas but, yes its still comparable to Dallas.

I think it's more than that. Houston's downtown core seems to encompass a larger area and just has a more urban feel to it. There is also a certain grittiness and greater multicultural presence to Houston that gives its downtown a bigger city vibe. Though neither currently (and likely never will given how and when the two cities developed) has a downtown that is as vibrant and truly urban as many smaller US cities, I hope both continue to increase their downtown densities.

Your first statement is correct. The second one is way off course.

Downtown Houston is more on par with Downtown LA than Dallas.

I agree it is, but add 2 or 3 towers to Dallas and its right there, not much difference.
