I live in Houston and I like the skyline and all, but we never had any major changes to the skyline since around 1978. I wish that Houston would add more and change it up because it needs a more modern look. It is still very impressive!
(If ya'll look at the fantasy section of Houston in the cities thing, it would be cool if they added the Emerald Plaza or/and the Earth Plaza)

Downtown Houston's skyline is still fairly large, thus having major changes is hard to do, we would have to go through a boom to truly change up the skyline. Places like Chicago, have gone through a boom, but it still isnt much different from the older skyline, even with the likes of Trump Tower, and the other countless skyscrapers over 500 ft,etc.

And changing up the main part of the skyline is even more challenging as there isnt much room to place towers in front of the main buildings, which I think is where a main problem lies. Had Houston's DT buildings been located centrally in the core of DT, there would be some shorter buildings in front of them to accentuate the density that many people don't think exist in DT Houston. I've always wished Wells Fargo Plaza, Herritage Plaza, One Shell Plaza, Continental Center, Bank of America Center, etc were clustered together in the middle of DT, and not at the forefront, where they hide all the buildings behind them.

But, the only way to change up the skyline district, would be to build really tall skyscrapers(600 ft+, but really,800 ft+) behind these buildings just to make a notable change, and what sucks even more, is that DT is laid out in a grid, so there will always be those gaps in the skyline due to the intervening streets in between buildings.

Heres hoping for a 900 footer to change Houston's skyline big time sometime in the not-too distant future.

SouthByMidwest Apr 17, 2010 12:56 AM

Supposedly the Chase Tower was going to be some 200 feet taller but the FAA told them to scale it down, apparently for air traffic going in and out of Hobby. Don't see why it would affect it so much. DT is a a pretty good way from Hobby. Although I'm glad this was done, because it really would stick out like a sore thumb, in the way the Sears Tower does in Chicago, IMO. For the record, I'm hardly the biggest Sears Tower fan. It's big, but so what? Much better 'scrapers to be seen in that city.

It's bad enough here in Houston that you can't see the Gulf or Neils Esperson buildings from the freeways, except from parts of 59. Two architectural gems entirely obscured by the larger modern towers - some of which are good to see, mind. I like Heritage and Bank of America Plaza in particular.

Basically, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better.

Most likely it's a recently cleared area, and something new will be built. That particular area of the city has undergone tremendous renewal in recent years.

TXLove Apr 17, 2010 3:23 AM

Nice new entries folks!!!! There are still lots of suface lots on the eastside of downtown, maybe one day those lots can be filled with mixed use hotel/residential buildings that will give Houston a new face to look at. There have been several additions to Houston's skyline since 2000, but you don't notice them in several angles because of the taller towers!

SouthByMidwest Apr 17, 2010 4:55 AM

That empty field was probably cleared out recently. That's the edge of old Fourth Ward, which has been gentrified and mostly rebuilt and that's ongoing.

It was once known as "Freedman's Town" which was a community of freed slaves in the 1800s. Then they built the Pierce Elevated right through it and killed the neighborhood, and it degenerated into a slum.

llamaorama Apr 17, 2010 6:15 AM

There used to be some old apartments on that site I think.

Somewhere in that vicinity, and maybe that is the spot, there was supposed to be a really large mixed-use development like you'd find in Dallas called Regent Square. But since the recession I don't know what the news is on it.

Like you'd see in Dallas? :haha:

And Regent Square is still on good terms.
