Wow, Kevin, you're right. It's absolutely amazing how "small" the TMC appears in these photos from just a few years ago compared to now, especially when you realize the growth to what would be to the south of the photo. Still, great stuff. |
For anybody that's interested in historical city photos, the Chronicle just published an amazing blog with several photos of Houston in the 1920s. Here is the link, and a couple of the photos from there. Check it out!!!

It's amazing that many people in this country think Texas is out there somewhere near Utah or Wyoming (yep, I've run into people who really believe that). I hope this Californian is smarter than that. I encountered a couple on the east coast who questioned how Houston could have a big port when it's "not anywhere near a body of water." The lack of knowledge of geography in this country is sickening. |
Man! i love seeing the old Houston photos!! i just wish some of it was still here like all the Victorian architecture and trollies :).
sorry but i have to comment on this.. Houston isn't isolated at all! yes Texas is freakin huge, (add Colorado to California and you have the same size as Texas), but not isolated. And what the hell does Mr. California mean by "Houston skyline and architecture is nice is just that it's in the middle of scenic nowhere"? please, do elaborate. And when you say "isolated", whom is Texas/Houston isolated from? Media? Megatropolis'? God forbid, PEOPLE?!?! I for one can say that I have never felt isolated here in Houston or San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Galveston even. Lubbock is about as close to isolation one can be in Texas..everything is freakin three hours away from it! but hey it is damn near 250,000 people.. SORRY!!!! I don't want to start anything! Just had to get that off my chest. I feel much better now! :) |
Great pics, just drove thru Houston on the way to Galveston a few weeks ago. When you pick up 45 and it takes you right to the edge of downtown, the bigger downtown, and you are in the shadow of the tallies, and looking at the beautiful architecture and driving 65mph its amazing and a bit scarey. I love this town! Close to the coast, NASA...tons to do there! In fact, its in the middle of everywhere!!

Fantastic stuff. It's exhausting just to make my way through it all. Keep those cards and letters coming...

Sure is looking a lot better from up high with those old surface lots filled or being filled in downtown.
|
I really love the skyline view coming up 288 then taking the ramp to 59 south... that shot sort of captures the viewpoint but of course with a much larger viewing frame.
