And you can see a reflection of the McDonalds in the window. That definitely looks like a bar between the KFC and the station.

A small number of photographers hung out at the station looking for young corn-fed hopefuls as they first arrived in Hollywood.

My first bus trip was in 1999, and i remember waiting an hour to board the bus and getting something from McDonald's and being worried that the bus might leave me. I know the Pic N Save was the last hold out for the name change to Big Lots, and it was a PNS well after they tore down the bus station. KFC was still around during that time as well.

I just found two additional photos of Diana Mitchell.

This is a photo from the 1932 film "Freaks" by Tod Browning.
Just so it is clear, this film wasn't an exploitation of the actors, but instead a celebration of their uniqueness as members of a sideshow, and how they bond as a family. Actually, the villain in this film is the female who is the only person in the "freakshow" without any disabilities, but she instead is a fake fortune teller and is pretending to care for a little person to get his money and break up his marriage. Remarkable film and WAY ahead of its time.

The McDonald's restaurant just north of here (reflected in the window near the bus) received their Certificate of Occupancy at the end of November, 1979. This photo was likely taken after that.

The restaurant and bar on the south side of the station with the wedge-shaped sign and the flagstone wall, was originally called The Grapevine Room.

The station was designed by architect Kenneth R. Swift in 1955. Los Angeles Times 24 Oct 1965 notes that he was the associate architect of the big bus terminal on 6th Street downtown designed by Welton Becket and opened in 1967.

Just to pile on, I remember that Greyhound station, too. I once picked up my then-girlfriend from there.

I'm wondering if this is an earlier incarnation of the Orange Inn, and later, Wigwam in Arcadia. The pictures came from different sources, so I don't know if they're connected. There are also Oaken Bucket orange juice glasses for sale, and an Oaken Bucket Rose Parade float.

Oh yeah, not a bad set. Gonna bid on them for sure!

So top row, left to right, you've got the utility stairs between the Hillcrest and the Astoria, looking from Clay up to Olive, near Third. There's demolition debris where the Hillcrest was so I'd peg these negs to late September/early October 1961.

Next shot is what looks like a jumble of demo debris. Probably from the Hillcrest. Next shot over is the doorway of the Dome Apartments. The next two shots, stacked one atop the other, are of the Brousseau.

Bottom row, far left, the back of something that fronts onto...somewhere. After I get it and look at it with a loupe I'll find some clue I'm sure.

Next to that is looking south on Grand from near 2nd alongside the Dome again. (Note: in the seller's listing they placed this neg down backward, so the image is reversed.)

Then there's what looks like a burnt-out structure, and, there was never any lack of structures aflame on the Hill, like the Boswell burning in May '62 or the Dome conflagration of '64. There was a stable in back of the Castle converted to residential that burned at some point, this may be that; I'll have to check into the date.

And speaking of the Castle, that there on the end of this row is our final photo.

The Grape Vine Room had a backdoor in the alley. One time I entered that bar and walked from the back to the front, because the driveway was clogged with buses and I wanted to get to Vine St. It was very dark inside as sleazy bars usually are. This place was about 3 blocks from where I lived on Santa Monica, Blvd.


Several times at night I took a bus from that station to San Diego - mid 1970s. I was in my 20s at that time.

Didn't either of you partake of the superb (or fine) food in the Grape Vine?

Martin that is amusing. I had not thought of that day since then. I really thought that I would not make it through that dark dungeon. I think the only light visible was the cash register and maybe the red exit sign. Food in that place...you're kidding? I didn't even want a bottled soda, let alone actual food.:slob: The bus station and the bar were totally separate. Remember, this is Hollywood, and not everything is as it may appear. When I was in college, I lived in Hollywood, my Los Angeles born mother was horrified. She knew too much. One rainy 1944 wartime night she was waiting for a bus....lo and behold, guess who gave her a ride .... radio producer Ozzie Nelson.

At that time I think I was too young to enter a bar!
