At my first glance, I didn't think the location of this photo is where it actually is:

It's Hollywood & Highland, facing West toward the Chinese Theatre.
Roosevelt Hotel in the distance on the left. Hollywood Hotel to the right.
The Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis film "At War with the Army" is playing at the Paramount Theatre.
(Part of the "7 Seas" blade sign can be seen above the theater marquee.)

The Chinese Theatre, whose spires can be seen over the P.E. Red Car, was playing a
double feature that day, Fox's technicolor "Call Me Mister" starring Betty Grable and Dan
Dailey, and a Bowery Boys entry titled "Bowery Battalion."

Speaking of the 7 Seas at 6904 Hollywood Blvd. (NLA doesn't like searching "7 Seas"...)
here are two nightclub folder photos from there.

Here's a photo c. 1950 of "7 Seas" in Hollywood.
At first I was thinking this might not be on Hollywood Blvd., but the street number
over the door is correct for the 6904 Hollywood Blvd. address.

Just a great image--always great to see pics of this vintage that include the great Chrysler Corp bathtub models of the '40s.... I can see no fewer than five in this shot, all up
front. The two on the left--looks a Plymouth turning. Next to the streetcar is a Chrysler--at right are another Plymouth and a couple of DeSoto cabs i front of the Hollywood Hotel....

Some were made here:

I think we've seen views of the plant here on NLA before...it was at Slauson & Eastern.

I noticed that message a week or two ago. The new system displays the images in a zoomable format much like USCDL and others, but so far they're still only 800px wide at 100%. Hopefully, LAPL will replace them with higher resolution scans in the future - I know that they have many images I'd love to be able to enlarge. On the down side, I like the way that the current system displays results in (reverse) chronological order, and I'm not sure you can do that with the new system.

1975 W. Washington Blvd.

There was a discussion at NLA about Father Divine and a related home in Beverly Hills on pages 1975 and 1976.

Another Divine-related home was one of his "Heavens" at 1975 W. Washington Blvd., which was built in 1907 for Frank Eckley,
secretary of the Inglewood Park Cemetery Association:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pspptillsa.jpg

February 3, 1907, Los Angeles Herald @ CDNC

Inglewood founder Daniel Freeman's daughter Grace married a Charles Howland, so perhaps that's her referred to below:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...v.jpg~original

November 1, 1907, Los Angeles Herald @ CDNC

Here is 1975 W. Washington, on the NE corner of Ardmore, on the 1907 Sanborn Map. Back then, Ardmore was known
as Lenox. The 10-foot-wide alley at the top was apparently meant to access the lot to the east of the Eckley home:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pswdcdxpyz.jpg

ProQuest via LAPL

The 1921 Sanborn Map shows the home's exterior is about the same:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psppbvkwzn.jpg

ProQuest via LAPL

You can see 1975 W. Washington at left in this view looking east on Washington in 1926, the year before a fire escape
was added just north of the chimney:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psdzir7fsc.jpg

00068466 @ LAPL

Here we get a good look at the house in 1935, when it was one of Father Divine's "Heavens." The information with the photo
alludes to another "Heaven" at 4011 Compton Avenue, but that building looks to have been torn down:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...i.jpg~original

Islandora/UCLA – LA Daily News Negatives

I bet the chimney damage happened in the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...p.jpg~original

Eventually the Magyar Athletic Club came to own 1975 W. Washington, and they built an addition to the home in 1949-50:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pszqawczec.jpg

LADBS

The 1950 Sanborn was up-to-date with that addition:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pskgs2wfwr.jpg

ProQuest via LAPL

It appears not much has changed at 1975 W. Washington since 1950:

This is the Ardmore side of 1975 W. Washington, with the chimney cut off at the roof line:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pssmxgmj36.jpg

March 2015 GSV

It seems that the lot to the east of 1975 W. Washington has never been built on, other than a parking lot. This view suggests
that Eckley owned the lot when he built his home next door:

Ansel Adams/oil derricks

The LAPL has 9 or 10 Ansel Adams photos of oil derricks in or near Los Angeles, including our favorite one in the middle of La Cienega. He also took photos of oil derricks at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach.

The two most interesting images feature a striking juxtaposition of oil derricks and an imposing Italianate civic building (school? post office? apartment?). I may well be wrong, but I don't remember seeing these here before. Does anyone recognize this building?

FATHER DIVINE AND MOTHER DIVINE CELEBRATE 7TH ANNIVERSARY IN LOS ANGELES

"The 7th Anniversary of the Holy Marriage of FATHER DIVINE to his spotless virgin bride was honored by many followers, friends and guests
as they gathered together on Sunday, November 1, 1953 A.D.F.D., to enjoy a review Celebration of the Marriage feast at 3528 West Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles, California."

"Throughout the year, such Reviews and Celebrations are commemorated and revered, world wide. In these latter days, the meek and the righteous of the earth
are called to this great ingathering of the people, just as it was foretold in the Scriptures and is being fulfilled this day and dispensation A.D.F.D."

It was at this point that it dawned on me that the 'guests of honor' were not present. (Huh!?)

I thought this was Mother Divine (Edna Rose Ritchings) standing by the GRIFT gift table.

But the photo is captioned: "Photo of Miss Happy Word at the head of the Banquet Table."

So who is this Miss Happy Word  ....someone other than Mother Divine?

One last look inside 3528 West Adams Blvd.

I surmise the two portraits hanging on the bookcases stood-in for the real deal.

(if Father Divine had been in attendance...he no doubt would have been featured in practically every photograph)

The Munich building is a knockoff of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence... the Somethinghalle was built by Mad King Ludwig's grandfather, who was into architecture himself. Presumably the Forest Lawn version was inspired by the original too. (Art history class memories.)

Car 1111 was a favorite for fantrips , I assume because of the number. The date caught my eye, very late , as the 1100s were soon to be sold and sent to Buenos Aires, going by rail to Houston or Galveston to be loaded on ships
