http://larry.wizegallery.com/VWV/sawtelle.jpg (Google satellite, hosted by me) The blue-striped building labeled "3 day suit broker" is the only thing closest to the center, but it has a warehouse-style roof - certainly not a 1906 home. |
I love this thread! It's taken me a couple of years to read everything, but I've learned so much! I think I need to start at the beginning again as I've slowly gotten acquainted with old LA, the beginning posts will mean much more the 2nd time around.
A big thank you to everyone who posts! I appreciated it! |

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...LASawtelle.jpg Historic Aerials Several property websites (eg. trulia.com) list the nearby 1750 Sawtelle Blvd as being built in 1906. It's currently a church, but the Google aerial view shows three smaller buildings behind. They all appear on the 1952 aerial. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Lighthouse.jpg GSV |

We've had a few posts about Tanner Motor Livery recently, but I haven't seen any mention of this phone number before. The OXford exchange would suggest Pico Rivera/Whittier, but they seem to be advertising their branch at the Beverly-Wilshire Hotel. Any guesses? Their number in San Diego was Main 3111.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...erMLOxford.jpg www.cookbkjj.com As well as Tanner Motor Livery limousines, there was also Tanner Motor Tours operating The Gray Line. These brochures all date from the '30s and '40s (according to their sellers). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Ebay These tickets/passes are even earlier. I have not found this to be posted here before. It's my understanding that the original Earl Carroll's Theatre neon sign was gone by the '60's, but Los Angeles' Museum of Neon Art (MONA) has recreated it and recently, at least, it was at the Universal City Walk...I need to go see it. I haven't been to MONA since they moved, after 30 years, to Glendale, but I should go there, too! I don't know if it was built to the scale of the original, which was twenty feet high.

Harrelson Block at Third Street and Winston Street
Does anyone have any info on the Harrelson Block located on the South side of Third Street between South San Pedro and Wall Street. The block and adjacent buildings look pretty old. I thought perhaps somebody else here might be able to shed some light on these forgotten, and perhaps soon to be razed buildings.
Here are some photos I shot a few days ago: https://static.panoramio.com.storage.../100196522.jpg https://static.panoramio.com.storage.../100196521.jpg Building on the SW corner of Third and Wall.
