I can't help you with the name of the pool and snooker business, but here's another view of the same buildings: http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...LA/LAAsahi.jpg Daralee's Web World Photos on Flickr The caption says: "Asahi Shoes and Dry Goods was located at 321 E. 1st in J-Town (Japanese Town) in Los Angeles during the 1960s through the late 1980s. Next door at 323 E. 1st St. was Granada Fish Co. Photo taken by Daralee on June 19, 1982." |
:previous: excellent find HossC! It's interesting to compare the small differences between the two.

Sportbiker, the links in your quote seem to have been truncated, and consequently the first two don't work. To save people the trouble of looking for the original post, here it is with complete links: Quote:

The cafeteria concept may not have been completely settled when the Angles Flight-Vegetarian first got started. The 1909 directory listed a Vegetarian "cafe" at 259 S. Hill and a Vegetarian "cafeteria" at 622 S Broadway. http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCar...an&submit=Find The same directory lists Marion Johnson as a waiter for the 259 Hill establishment. Maybe he was responsible for beverages. http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCar...doc=vegetarian http://imgzoom.cdlib.org/Converter?i...=0&w=932&h=434http://imgzoom.cdlib.org/Converter?i...=0&w=932&h=434 |

Fantastic, ER--thank you. I have a partial view of the picture above, although for my story on 3240 Wilshire--in my blog lineup with its full story in the works--I created a different illustration based on another photograph: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...boulevard.html https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...2520AM.bmp.jpg The "2" circled in the top photo indicates the former site of the William Lacy/John G. Bullock house (sw corner of Wilshire & Vermont); it was moved to 627 South Plymouth in Windsor Square, where it still stands. That story is complete: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html |

Residential Wilshire Blvd.
To the poster responsible for the fascinating site on Wilshire Blvd. when it was residential, thank you! Any information on the old Victorian mansions on Wilshire, presumably near downtown, photographed in color by Charles Cushman?

In the early 1900s, Casa Verdugo was an independent settlement in what is now northwest Glendale.
In 1904 L.C. Brand brought the Pacific Electric Railway out to the 'netherlands' of Casa Verdugo. At the end of the line, the railway company turned an old adobe into a restaurant, hoping to entice visitors to take the scenic ride. The property was leased to Piedad Yorba de Sowl, and was an immediate success.
