We all said it was inevitable way back when they presented the design. And now it's closed while they work on a solution. Which will probably inevitably be higher railings. I still am a little mind-boggled that they just didn't built it with higher railings on the exterior in the first place.

Well as long as it looks good, those pesky smaller things such as....suicide prevention measures, fall by the way side in a structure like this.

Tragic? Yes. Sad? Yes.

But let's not fool ourselves. It is no more tragic here than it is when it happens everywhere else in the city. It's far too often that something like this happens in the city, but if it happens in the polished west side? Shock and awe that this could possibly happen. Only if you live in a bubble of course.

Man dies of injuries after jumping in front of oncoming train in Manhattan

According to the NYPD, officers responded to a call of a man on the tracks at 34th Street—Penn Station at 9:19 a.m. on Nov. 20. Upon their arrival, it was confirmed that a man had been hit by an oncoming northbound 1 train at the station.

A spokesperson for the NYPD stated that a motorman at the station witnessed the victim jumping onto the tracks as the train pulled into the station. EMS declared the victim, who has yet to be identified, dead at the scene.

And these subways are just trouble waiting to happen.

Man dead, 5-year-old daughter hurt after jumping in front of train in Bronx

Person fatally jumps from Upper East Side apartment building

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the 20 million square feet of development planned for the neighborhood would not only include retail and commercial space, but also housing — a significant chunk of it affordable.

Officials had previously drafted a proposal to develop 10 buildings with more than 1,000 hotel rooms and 14 million square feet of office space, according to a scope of work issued in December.

But during a briefing to elaborate on his myriad State of the State proposals, Cuomo unveiled more extensive plans, including up to 1,400 affordable units. The governor said the state would make “14 building sites available” for the development and that affordable homes would be the priority.

The four additional buildings are planned for two state-owned sites next to and across the street from the Javits Center, according to state officials.

Empire State Development, the state’s development arm, initially envisioned only commercial space for the eight sites in the immediate vicinity of Penn Station. But in its final plan, the agency opened the door to three of those sites having residential space. To allow for the development of these and the other five sites, the state is seeking to override city zoning regulations to construct larger buildings.

The new buildings around Penn would generate revenue to help pay for the station’s redevelopment. The state plans to add another eight tracks by acquiring a block south of Penn, which contains 51 separate properties.

Time to Have Your Say On the Future of Penn Station and “Manhattan Midtown West”

LeFrancois warned at the MCB4 Executive Committee in March that If the plan moves forward: “It will only make the area more dangerous, crowded, and we could add the Empire Station Complex plan to the list of planning failures for the city and the state.”

NYC Reaping Hudson Yards Dividends After Luxury Building Boom

The Hudson Yards Infrastructure Corp., created by the city to finance the redevelopment, has transferred about $663 million in surplus property tax and other revenue to the city since 2017, 80% of which was in the last three years, according to an offering document for a bond sale this week.

The distribution is more than the $360 million the city spent to subsidize the interest payments on $2.7 billion of debt sold by the infrastructure corporation to finance the extension of the No. 7 subway line and a boulevard-lined park. It’s also more than enough to cover $230 million in cost overruns and future planned spending for the new neighborhood.

The city estimates existing and future development in Hudson Yards will generate $27.1 billion from the current fiscal year through 2047, six times more than debt service for the corporation’s bonds.

“Hudson Yards is a financial win for the city of New York,” said Mitch Schwartz, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio in an email.

But in the last decade developers have built or renovated seven offices buildings with three more towers under construction. The district encompasses Related Cos.’ branded Hudson Yards project as well as Brookfield Properties’ Manhattan West.

Asking office rents in Hudson Yards average $118.54 per square foot, the highest in New York City, according to Cushman & Wakefield, a commercial real estate services firm that prepared a development and revenue report for this week’s bond sale. Taxable assessed values of four completed towers in Hudson Yards fell less than 1% this year, compared with almost 12% for commercial real estate overall. Occupancy rates in the completed office buildings range from 72.2% to 100%.

To be sure, the pandemic did claim Neiman Marcus, the anchor of Hudson Yards’ tony mall, which filed for bankruptcy in May 2020. Still, the mall makes up about 3% of the overall development. The residential market is still recovering and hotels are struggling.

However, the district’s amenities, eco-friendly buildings with open floor plans, and proximity to the new Moynihan Train Hall and Pennsylvania Station, which is under renovation, have proved attractive to workers and companies, said Nora Wittstruck, an S&P analyst.

“There’s a lot of synergy around” Hudson Yards, said Wittstruck.

What is wrong with these people??? They had to simply put glass around the areas where suicides can be 100% prevented.

Progress continues to be made on High Line X Moynihan Connector

You might be able to avoid the traffic to Penn Station with this new mode of transportation. The High Line X Moynihan Connector will link the High Line’s Spur to the public plaza at Manhattan West, the route will lead all the way to Moynihan Train Hall on 9th ave.

The connector broke in February of this year but with construction starting now it will hopefully be reopened for use in the spring of 2023.

The design for the connector was originally made in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, who was a part of the High Line’s original design team, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
