Downtown NOIR

A lot of strange things have happened up on that roof. Just ask Elisa Lam about it. I might be staying there later next month and maybe not. My sister thinks it not a good idea for me to stay at the Cecil. It looks very noirish http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pse5b355ec.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps332bfc5d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps953aa0c8.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps50f74173.jpg |

Funny you should post this now. In the past two months, I've gone ahead and unearthed practically everything there is to know about this building and its history. In fact, I'll be giving a free slideshow lecture about it tomorrow (Sunday) in downtown L.A. A tidbit: one of the land's first owners was Mrs. Genevieve Paddleford, America's most notorious "international adventuress and love pirate" for nearly 40 years. Hers is quite a story. Fascinating stuff! |

So glad it's the weekend. I finally have a minute to catch up with the thread. So many gorgeous posts. Thank you. Some odd bits tripped over on the net this week: Ed Fuentes may have figured out why our downtown streets don't quite conform to the Laws of the Indies: http://www.viewfromaloft.org/2013/06...h-to-tree.html One of the Einar Petersen murals from the Rosslyn is up on eBay: http://www.laobserved.com/archive/20...rsen_mural.php la.curbed has some previously-mentioned-on-the-thread hotel recommendations for CityBoyDoug, including the Ritz Milner, Hollywood Historic and Coral Sands: http://la.curbed.com/archives/2013/0...00_a_night.php And, finally, the Getty has acquired three sets of sequenced aerial pix from Lane Barden The Linear City Portfolio Viewed in sequence on Barden's site, they really do give one a new perspective on favorite and familiar locations: Wilshire Blvd from the sea to DTLA (9 images) http://www.lanebarden.com/en/01_Sequ.../03_Sequence3/ https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...40002%2BPM.jpg The LA River, Canoga Park to the sea (18 images) http://www.lanebarden.com/en/01_Sequ.../01_Sequence1/ https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-K...40224%2BPM.jpg And the Alameda Supply Corridor (10 images) http://www.lanebarden.com/en/01_Sequ.../02_Sequence2/ https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-U...40450%2BPM.jpg More info: http://www.laobserved.com/archive/20...QQ4BT8.twitter |

Pet Shop Boys and Other Musings

-earlier tonight I came across this interesting 1959 slide. http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/16/l3mw.jpg ebay -trying to figure out the address, I searched under 'florists' in the 1956 city directory since the 'plants' sign is prominent. Eventually I found a Germain's...but as a pet shop at 625 S. Hill Street. I looked at the slide again and decided the window display does look a bit like a pet shop. http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/96/sjbz.jpgGoogle Street View It looks like the building housing Germains has been replaced by another monstrosity. But you have the right address for Germains. To be certain, I found some detailing on the side windows of the building next door, which still stands, minus the earlier fire escape. The matching areas are circled in red. ...then I noticed 'Snafu Coffee Shop' several lines below Germain's in the directory and remembered this photograph I posted here last week. http://imageshack.us/a/img834/2546/y5vo.jpg ebay At first I thought the 'Transocean Air Lines' office was the old 'Germains Pet Shop' space. -but the addresses don't seem to add up. Now (after a few beers) I am completely c o n f u s e d! __help[/QUOTE] http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/196/rcqg.jpgGoogle Street View I was dumbfounded to see that the old Snafu building is still with us. I had assumed the old photo showed it during demolition, but it is definitely the same place. The two small buildings were simply remodeled into one storefront. For proof, look at the top left edge of the roof, and how it aligns with the brickwork on its neighbor. Identical in both shots. |
:previous: Thank you Albany NY! This was driving me crazy.

Thanks for the follow-up. The Encore Theater appears in the '73 directory at 5308 Melrose . . . XXX--3545. According to Cinema treasures, it started out in the '40s as the "Melvan" and later became a TV sound stage and warehouse before being revamped and renamed the Encore (1963), before another rechristening as the Continental ('80s) and ending up as a place exclusive for the parking of cars. Photos (that don't reproduce well) and misspelling of theater name (Melvin): http://s3.amazonaws.com/bo-assets/pr...lksBKWUr8fU%3D http://photos.cinematreasures.org/pr...jpg?1348072935 http://photos.cinematreasures.org/pr...jpg?1348072935 http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...yre/001-11.jpghttp://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...yre/001-11.jpg |
