A lottery is held and routes are distributed evenly. A Park guide must be hired to accompany the vehicle in the Park. Some Parks close again from 930 am to 3 pm and then for the night at 6 pm. Vehicles must stay on track and on the assigned route. Elephants can go off-road and that is when we got our best tiger viewing from on top of elephants. I saw a total of 18 Asiatic lions, and saw a Jungle cat although it was moving too fast to shoot a picture of. They aren't rare but they are rarely seen. bee eater http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/...f26ae7fc_b.jpg Asiatic lioness and one of her 2 cubs in Gir National Park, Gujarat (near the Arabian Sea) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4107/...e093ea74_b.jpg trance dancing with the siddis. the siddis are from Africa and live in Gujarat India. I am including them in this thread because they are an ancient traditional culture who see themselves as part of the natural world. they drummed, breathed fire, threw hot coals to each other, danced, built human pyramids and even hoisted me up on top of someone's shoulders and danced me around the fire. I looked all around for my peeps to see if they were joining in the fun, but none of them were there. They went for dinner instead. I was the only non-Indian in the crowd which was great. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4085/...67d34089_b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1266/...3db396c5_b.jpg ele smiling http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/...f6110451_b.jpg misty sunrise Bandhargarh National Park, Madya Pradesh. a 6 hour drive from the nearest airport, in the heart of the middle of India http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1274/...5abc518a_b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1286/...2f3f9d0b_b.jpg a big Bengal! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4132/...9226274f_b.jpg |

In case you think Canada is frozen over at this time of year, the December sun is shining on the green grass in the Vancouver area.

This mute swan attacked me which is why this pic is a little blurry. After this shot, the pictures were just a blur as the beak went for the boys and I did a little dance to avoid the beak finding its target.
Unfortunately, the swan was killed February 16. The island vet who examined the body said it appeared it was a canine who attacked it as there were holes caused by teeth in the neck. The vet theorized that the swan was able to fly away from the attack but then drowned in the ocean. There is a dog-wolf at large on the island eating pets and deer, and it is not known if it was the culprit or not. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5133/...c4764715_b.jpg |

We have had a ton of Painted Buntings this summer out on our property near Austin. Very beautiful birds.

So you're the one who stole my birds? Just kidding, we get them in the winter. It's always a little sad when you realize they're gone of the season.

Gorillas at the Pittsburgh Zoo... Fine, I wasn't in West Equatorial Africa, but zoos are the only place I'll be able to see a gorilla! :D

Sorry! Naw, but y'all have the eastern painted buntings in the winter. They summer up the coast from y'all in Georgia and the Carolinas. The ones we have are mostly from Mexico and Central America. They summer in the Texas Hill Country north up to Oklahoma, Arkansas and east over to Louisiana. |
:previous: painted buntings are beautiful!

Lizard love
A pair of green anoles mating outside on our patio.
They're native in Texas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_anole Usually they run off if you get very close, but these two were a bit preoccupied. http://i55.tinypic.com/2gujj2p.jpg http://i51.tinypic.com/213ll50.jpg |
