I wonder if this Chevy truck was at A E Nugent. The description says the owner was someone named Wasserman, but the location is given as 4th Street & South La Brea Avenue, and the date as 1933.

Along the SP Sunset Route mainline (and later Valley Blvd.) about halfway between El Monte and La Puente. This was the junction with the SP Covina Branch.

A while back i got the dvd "This Was Pacific Electric" with Stephanie Edwards...somewhere in the dvd they said that PE was in charge of maintaining the streets the tracks we're on (ROW), and the upkeep was too much for them to handle... did the same ring true for LArwy, did they have the same agreement with the city. I ask because the asphalt looks great in this slide.

Here's Bassett Station and junction on a circa 1920 PE map, right where HenryHuntington said it was.

The large rooftop sign even farther in the distance may be one of a Citizens Bank branch--there was one at Pico & Bronson... maybe Hoss can shed some light....

It could well be the Citizen's National Bank. Here's a picture of the Pico-Bronson branch at 4117 West Pico from post #20783. The building is still standing, but without the roof sign.

A James H. Dewey appears in a voter registration in Los Angeles in 1888 as a photographer. In that registration he is listed at the Main Street Address . He later appears in the 1900 Census in Los Angeles and is listed as being a "merchant photographer" with his own shop. He was born in Ohio in 1864. In that census he is a roomer with the Gove family who lived at 322 Spring. Mr. Gove was a jeweler.

Mr. Dewey was married by the time of the 1910 census and was living with his wife at 225 W. 15th St. Both residences are long gone.

Thank you for the help! I had seen this one and only picture before. I am hoping to see some later dated ones if possible. The building permit is really neat to see. Seems almost all trace of A.E. Nugent Chevrolet has vanished. I understand "A" was for Albert but never have been able to track down his middle name.

We've seen Toff's on Hollywood Blvd. near the Chinese Theatre before,
but here's a street level color snapshot from the 1960's.

Looks like a James Bond film with Sean Connery is at, or coming to, the Chinese Theatre.
Appearing at the Cinegrill: Bill Darnell and Felix Martinique, maybe? It looks like Parnell, but
there was a singer named Bill Darnell. And where's the film footage from that lady's camera?

Albert Edward Nugent was born in Ontario, Canada in July of 1891. He was married to a Norma Nugent ( maiden name unknown) and they had one daughter, Ruth, born in 1922. He had served in the Navy, before WWI and worked for Procter and Gamble in St. Louis, according to his WWI draft registration, before moving west, first to Washington State where his daughter was born, and then to Los Angeles. He appears in the 1930 Census, living in Beverly Hills and he is noted to be a car dealer at that time. He also appears in the 1940 Census. Mr. Nugent died in 1955 and is buried in Forest Lawn, Glendale

I've just got a single Julius Shulman image for you today. This is a 1954 view looking north on S Spring Street from 7th Street. It's "Job 1688: Stiles Oliver Clements, view of Spring Street (Los Angeles, Calif.),1954". I really like dappled light, probably reflections, on the intersection. The Rush Drug Co is on the left. Next to that there appears to be a cocktail bar called Riley's with shamrocks on the sign, but we can't mention that on No Irish LA ;). In the background are the California Bank and Hotel Hayward.
