As cooler temps come along; now that I'm settled down here, I now have time to explore around. While doing so I've snapped some fotos, but it's best to view this wacky city in person. ;)

Enjoyed Austin City Limits pics. :)

Austin's definitely turning into a little big city, and I get the techie/hipster vibe from your photos!

mrnyc Oct 16, 2014 5:19 PM

sigh, what happened to my sleepy, hippy dippy, slacker-era austin?

jg6544 Oct 16, 2014 5:23 PM

Just wait, for a place that is as miserably hot as Austin is from May through September, it can get damned cold in the wintertime, too.

Nice pictures.

AviationGuy Oct 17, 2014 12:56 AM

You sure captured the vibe and charm of the city that I've called home for over 40 years.

I hadn't realized that the Austin City Limits fest turned into another mud-fest this year. I know it poured rain Saturday, but didn't realize it was that bad at the site.

Just for the sake of information, I believe the city proper is now close to 900,000, and the metro is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million. At times it seems like everyone of them is out and caught up in traffic.

Huh? The winters are freaking awesome here. I have over 30 palm trees in my yard, and I enjoy the winters much more than the six-month summers. Of course it's all based on life experience. I've spent most of my life living in Michigan and Minnesota. So I have a different perspective than someone from Miami or Honolulu would have.

Yep! Many beautiful faces here in Austin. I kinda had difficulty capturing them (somewhat shy still about aiming a camera at a random person), but I'm working on it!

The mud pits at ACL were pretty bad, nearly fell numerous times. One guy was wearing nice clothing and covered in mud, he just stood in place and had a look on his face as if he was lost.

Just wait. Nothing is worse than the summers, but Austin gets cold spells too. It doesn't have a winter in the since that they do in the northeast or midwest, but it gets plenty cold for a few days at a time.

KevinFromTexas Oct 18, 2014 12:37 AM

Oh, but I hate those few days when it's 35F for the high with no sun and drizzle. I'd take 100F and sunny over 40F and cloudy any day.

The reality is that winters in Austin (and the country in general) are highly variable, depending on hemispheric patterns, including El Nino and La Nina. Some winters in Austin are consistently sunny with highs in the 60s and 70s (with some excursions to the 80s and even 90), with cool to somewhat cold nights. Other winters, like 2013-2014, are pretty awful, with days on end of heavy coat weather, icing/sleet, and overcast/fog, but with some nice days, too. Some winters have a few days with highs only in the 20s. I would say that long term, most winters are pretty nice, but some are pretty awful overall. Notorious winters included 1973, 1978 (probably the worst), 1983 (pools froze in Austin and people were ice skating on Bachman Lake in Dallas in December), 1985 (an unusual amount of snow, including 10 inches in far south Austin metro), 1989 (a low of close to zero at the old airport, and below zero on the west side of Austin in late December), 2011 (same period that Dallas had the awful Superbowl weather) and 2013-2014. But even the "bad" winters had a number of nice days where you could go out in shorts. So it's really difficult to generalize. And some of the nicest winters have had a couple of days of damaging ice storms. A few years ago we had a day in December when the high was about 80 but by 8 p.m. it was snowing after an arctic front barreled through. It was crazy.

I know that winters further north are far, far colder. I'm just trying put some perspective on the reality of weather in Austin, just for informational purposes.

Me too. I can't stand cold weather during the day. Love cold nights because you can get covered in blankets, but when I go outside during the day I want it to be at least 75.

ATXboom Oct 19, 2014 2:29 PM

Lol you softies. You are all talking about a few days. Few weeks at best. Not a season. Try living in Detroit where it's 40f or below and gray skies for 6 months. It's the duration that is the killer. Winter in Austin is at best 2 months. And in that 2 months there is some really nice weather.

KevinFromTexas Oct 19, 2014 2:43 PM

I still hate it. Riding a bicycle in cold weather is the worst. I have asthma, so it's a little bit like breathing fire. It's weird. I can ride 40 miles up and down hills in temperatures in the upper 90s to 100F with humidity, but get the temperature down around 55F or below and I'm miserable. And then there's the layers of clothes that become extra baggage.

I can't say I'm looking forward to riding my bike to my new job this fall/winter on those nastiest of days. I dislike the bus, too, they're too slow and aren't direct enough. I'd rather get there under my own steam even if I am wheezing like a tea pot.

Hating cold weather is probably the most Texan thing about me.

Exactly. The average high in January is 60F. Bunch of winter pu$$ies we got here in Austin. :) When the temp in Minnesota hit -30F and below we could through a bucket of water out the front door and watch it freeze before it hit the ground.
