I suspect two things are in play with that old house. Would the public really be interested and the price.

The CEO of Disney probably would spend the money on a new glitzy ride to make more money. Remember that Disney is firing hundreds of older expensive employees and replacing them with cheaper foreign workers. Its always the bottom line.

The building permit for this home was issued on July 7, 1919. This illustration in the June 15, 1919, Los Angeles Times

Yes, I know it says 524 Plymouth. The article with the drawing says 524 Plymouth was being built for Harry S. Goldberg.
But he lived at 424 S. Plymouth, which does not look like the drawing. Also, there is no 524 S. Plymouth. There is a 528,
but it doesn't look like the drawing either, plus it wasn't built until 1926.

So I kept poking around, because the home in the drawing looks somewhat like this Windsor Square home, shown in the
April 1920 The Architect and Engineer of California:

Its hard to wrap my head around what happened.

484 homes burned.

As a direct result of the Bel Air Fire, Los Angeles initiated a series of laws and fire safety policies. These included the banning of wood shingle roofs in new construction and one of the most stringent brush clearance policies in the United States.

It appears that those wood shingle roofs were a fire waiting to happen.

"Shake" roofs ARE a fire waiting to happen and they should be banned throughout the west.

I was going to post this Julius Shulman photo yesterday, but then I came across a load of extra pictures to sort through. This is the only one in "Job 416: Welch's (Long Beach, Calif.), 1949".

The address of Welch's was 4401 Atlantic Boulevard. You can see the distinctively-shaped restaurant on the north-west corner of the intersection with E San Antonio Drive in this 1972 view. By 1980, it was gone.

Welch's apparently billed itself as "Southern California’s Most Beautiful Restaurant". There are more color pictures and some additional information in an article at onbunkerhill.org. The article also covers Grisinger’s Drive-In Coffee Shop on the opposite corner of the intersection.

Thank you to Hoss C for his recent post on this unique and ultra modern restaurant....and comments by ER.

My parents would often take out-of-town guests to Welch's in the 1950s. I loved the restaurant. It catered to children and that's why my parents took us there. Plus, the food was outstanding.

The owner, Mr. Welch, had been the manager of the Navy Officer's club at the Naval Station Long Beach during WWII. His mother had built several restaurants herself back in the 1930s. Therefore the whole Welch Family had a lot of food establishment experience.

I'm acquainted with Mr. Welch's daughter who was hostess of Welch's. We've exchanged emails. A few years ago she sent me some old Welsh's matchbooks.

This salad bar was a soft pink color and they always had some bright red lobsters on the ice. Families were seated in this area at the right. Couples were seated in the Tropical Room in previous post.

The text at the bottom of this kid's menu is a testament of how kids were treated at Welch's...always welcome, even though the establishment was very adult oriented.
The kid's plates were as elaborate as the adult servings....just a bit smaller portions.

The original building permit image is not available, but it's dated September 14, 1908. There is another permit from August 7, 1964,
which refers to a "parapet correction." Maybe that's when the building got its haircut?

I have never heard of Pat Gresham (and her organ) but the name made me flash on Pat Collins "the Hip Hypnotist" who was a fixture on the Strip for many years. Has she been discussed here previously? And does anyone know the location of the club where she performed or its name? I went there once (late 70's) and it was a memorable evening.

In the late 70's, I lived on Olive Drive, south of Sunset and the Comedy Store, north of Santa Monica Bvd and Barney's Beanery.

I lived on Hancock between Sunset (where Holloway meets Sunset) and Santa Monica Blvd. in the 1980s.

I'm glad you brought up Pat Collins Blaster, what an interesting character she was!

The other mainstay of the Strip during that era was Skip E. Lowe at the Continental Hyatt House, next door to the Comedy Store. (Martin Short's Jiminy Glick character is largely based on the Skipster.)

Surprising that no one (including her obituary writer) mentions that "Miss" Pat Collins was a regular "for years" at The Interlude, above The Crescendo on The Strip. I well remember the ads for her at The Interlude in the Times when I was a teenager in the mid 60's. Presumably her popularity there propelled her into her own "Celebrity Club."
