I thought I'd read that Copley Place Tower was shelved for now ?

I'm assuming you're referring to this article?

This was mulled over at Archboston. Essentially, there's been no news on Copley Place since its approval while there was been plenty of news on other developments in Boston. It stood out for that, and the Boston Globe seized on it.

Simon (the developer) is making an announcement on the development in the spring. It's probably most prudent to wait until then. But this discussion is probably best for the Copley Place development discussion page, if there is one.

Yep, that looks like the article. Here's hoping it goes ahead.

Looks like this will restart soon... I work 2 blocks away, looking forward to the crater finally being filled, although the tower portion will lag behind a bit.

Yup, they've signed a major tenant; advertising company Arnold Worldwide. They will work on restoring the old Filene's building first (as that is where Arnold will be moving) and then they will begin work on the tower portion.

Exciting times in Boston!

Looks like some activity is starting on the low rise portion (the old Filene's). Tarps came down earlier this week and it looks like wall studs are starting to go up. Snapped this on my walk to the subway after work yesterday:

Tower groundbreaking put on hold

May 31, 2013

Developer Millennium Properties has postponed the June 4 official groundbreaking of the 625-foot Millennium Tower on the downtown site of the former Filene’s because Mayor Thomas M. Menino, longtime champion of the project, is undergoing prostate surgery.

NYguy's in Beantown!

Apparently this is a temporary hold, and I wish Mayor Menino all the best.

Great to see the project moving forward.

Menino Breaks Ground On $630M Project At Former Filene’s Site
By The Associated Press September 17, 2013 Updated Sep 17, 3:30 pm

BOSTON — Ground was broken Tuesday for a redevelopment project intended to transform a hole that’s marred Boston’s busiest shopping district for years into a gleaming 625-foot mixed-use skyscraper.

Mayor Thomas Menino and officials from developer Millennium Partners participated in a ceremony to launch construction of the $630 million project at the site of the former Filene’s department store in Downtown Crossing.

“The Filene’s site is synonymous with downtown Boston,” Menino said. “The start of construction celebrates the beginning of a new chapter in the history of this historic building and highlights the promising future that is in store for this neighborhood.”

The 1.4 million-square-foot tower will consist of luxury residences as well as office and retail space. Developers announced that Boston-area supermarket chain Roche Brothers will occupy some of the space. And the project also includes the restoration and preservation of the historic Burnham Building next door.

“We strongly believe that this new project will support the further economic resurgence of one of the country’s most vibrant urban centers, and will extend residential and retail growth in a continuous stretch from the Theatre District to City Hall,” said Christopher Jeffries, founding partner at Millennium Partners.

The groundbreaking came a day after the city approved nearly $8 million in tax breaks to the developer, to be spread out over 13 years. The development is expected to generate about $60 million in property taxes for the city.

Menino had opposed tax breaks for the previous developer, which pulled out because of financial problems at the height of the recession, leaving a crater in the middle of the city.

Looks like they're starting to drill for the footings. Also, they have put up a lot of fencing and protection around the subway station elevator and entrance.

Found a good spot to get an overview of the site from the 3rd floor of a store across the way. I snapped this on my lunch hour today. Looks like more drilling for footings and continued excavation.
