One of the docents at the LAFD Museum in Hollywood told me that USC also designed that station and
failed to include a place to dry the hoses.

In my younger days, I used to marvel at photographs like this...

"My god," I would wonder, "How did the photographer ever manage to capture this incredible moment in time?"

Years later, as the scales fell from my eyes, it became clear that most of these incredible moments were staged -- even purposely shot a little "off" or a little out of focus, in order to appear extemporaneous.

It's Friday, and I've found another Julius Shulman photoset of a house in Beverly Hills. This one is "Job 3207: Rex Lotery, Parks House (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1961".

Notice how the contoured wall panel on the left is the same pattern as the exterior panels, but with the in and out bits reversed (as if the exterior panels were a mold for the interior ones).

A 2011 article at la.curbed.com gives the address as 1113 N Beverly Drive. It says that Michael LaFetra, who has also owned Pierre Koenig’s Case Study House #21, bought it when it came onto the market for the first time since it was built it 1960. The article also includes some recent pictures mixed in with some of Mr Shulman's. You can't see the house from the street, so here's an aerial view looking west.

Wanting a photographic rather than a computer generated view, I looked at supercharge.info. I hope that the missing garage structure in this north-looking view is just being rebuilt, because the Curbed article suggested that Michael LaFetra had restored the property. A quick Google didn't turn up any stories about the house being demolished (as seems to happen a lot in this area).

One of the comments on the Curbed article I linked to just says "poolside carports?". I see from the recent picture that they've given up trying to grow plants in the shade.

Its almost brutally modern looking...kind of like a Frank Lloyd Wright house but without his signature endearing details.

I thought maybe we could help USC figure out the location of these two houses.



Here's their description....which really doesn't say much:

"Photograph of two two-story homes which may be located in Los Angeles. The house on the left has a porch on the second story,
a steeply peaked roof with a dormer window inside it, and a broad set of stairs leading to the front entrance. The house on the right is larger;
it has two large porches on both the first and second stories and a dormer window on the side."



They fail to mention the building in the distance on the right. (see detail below)

The combination of the radio tower & the rooftop sign instantly made me think of the Pacific Theater and the Knickerbocker. Does the address start with 16--?

I really don't know. Just a first impression.

I couldn't find any of these buildings still standing. The demo permit for 1121 W 36th Street was issued in 1970. The church was the 1912 Church of the Redeemer at 1075 W 36th Street. The 1960 CD lists it as the Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Its demo permit was issued in 1969, and the replacement tennis courts were built two years later. That part of W 36th Street is now Childs Way on the USC campus. Here's the area on the 1921 Baist map.

I'm going to look through various aerial photographs of USC campus and see if I can spot the church and the 'mystery' house.

(well it's not exactly a mystery I guess, but it sound more exciting that way. :))

The station used to have a tower, so hopefully that will make it easier to spot.

I say, that's a building and intersection that doesn't exist anymore.

At USC DL there's a 1928 shot of the L.A. Riding Academy at a different location. Source places it where the Pacific Design Center complex is now, but it looks more like the current location of the Bev Cen, so I don't know:
