buildings coming and going
I took these last week. They aren't exactly mystery locations, but somehow they seem to be related...

Excellent sleuthing FW...
but I have to admit I became confused as I worked my way through the old Sanborn maps. What you're basically saying is... the two homes in the photgraph (shown below) are still standing. (despite the demolition permit) Quote:
HERE (March 2018) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/2Pi9TM.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/KdOLjo.jpg Check out this location HERE.... And the two story home in the distance (in the 1891 photo) has survived as well. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/qnYTrI.jpg HERE FW's original post HERE |

Lanewood Ave. in Hollywood is lined by 'old growth' pine trees. To be honest...(I'm not entirely sure how old a tree has to be to be considered 'old growth') https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/EwYgzJ.jpgGSV < - - - SUNSET BLVD. - - - >.................................................................. So...who planted them? ....Could this (Lanewood Ave.)have been a farmer/rancher's lane at some point in the distant past? Hmmm...now that I'ma ponderin' :farmer:. ....I wonder if the pines show up in any of the old photographs of Hollywood? (judging by their height I says they're around 100 years old) Would you say that's about right, odinthor? Here is Lanewood Ave. from La Brea. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/7sorvY.jpg That's a pretty impressive sight! View down Lanewood Ave. from La Brea HERE |

For some reason, those construction/demolition images remind me of Chernobyl... |
Here are a couple of mystery houses from Mary Pickford movies...anyone? HossC? FW?
EDIT: The first turns out to be 450 S. Lucerne Blvd https://i.postimg.cc/1RCn3tY9/Brickh...-Long-Legs.jpg From Daddy Long Legs, 1919 https://i.postimg.cc/bvypn0s4/House-...-Maris-bmp.jpg From Stella Maris, 1918 |

Considering the location, I bet there are some very interesting artifacts from the past to be found in the soil being turned up. |

Thanks, e_r, and I apologize for not being clear. The house in the foreground of the old photo, 1448 Temple, was torn down in 1926. I even checked a 1927 aerial to be sure, and 1448 Temple is gone. The house in the distance on the right side of the old photo, 339 Laveta Terrace, still stands in altered form. The small house so in need of restoration, 372 Laveta, is not in the old photo, but it was in the neighborhood and I was struck by its appearance. That house has basically been on the SE corner of Temple and Laveta since at least 1890, but in 1910 it was moved to the rear of the lot, reoriented and had its address changed from 1462 Temple to 372 Laveta. |
:previous: No apologies necessary, FW.
That little house you found is an amazing survivor. |

That's a mighty fine house. :previous: Thanks for the reply odinthor. I appreciate it. Take a look at this photograph, folks. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Hb35vU.jpg cardboardamerica The tall trees, that you see in the background, are the Lanewood Pines behind the Carolina Pines, Jr. at La Brea & Sunset. Pretty cool coincidence, huh. :) Wenders, a NLA alumnus, used to live on Lanewood Avenue. He mentioned the Lanewood pine trees back in 2014. Go HERE . |
Mystery object found.

...so the photographer was on the roof behind the signs. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/uCntku.jpg ;) |

I wonder if those trees are also 100 years old. They look to be about the same age. https://i.postimg.cc/RCPs1WtY/coldwater.jpg https://goo.gl/maps/9Qpt1KeVGLSGLKvc9 |
lMysteryl building, Inglewood.
The following two amateur slides were taken by a rail fan. (we recently discussed his slide from 9th & Hopper that showed one, possibly two, gas tanks HERE) He also took the slides of the Watts train station, and sub-station, HERE "Kodachrome Slide, Pacific Electric, LaRy, INGLEWOOD, Substation? HILLCREST Bl. 1950s" Take a look at this interesting building. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/T7FnyK.jpg Ebay (no longer listed) It doesn't look like a sub-station to me. It 'almost' looks like a country school (the upper half, anyway). It also reminds me, somewhat, of an old carriage house. In the distance, on the right, there appears to be a rather tall house. (or perhaps it's some other type of building) The seller was impressed enough with the building that he decided to take this second slide. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/P9aAPJ.jpg Ebay (no longer listed) The smaller building on the left was partially hidden by a tree, and out of the frame, in the first slide. You can see the roof of a small house beyond the small building. There is another house(?) in the trees on the right - - > The seller also included this additional information. She (I think it's a she) pretty much pinpointed the location for us. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/t43M2L.jpg I saved all this before the ad was taken down. Soooooo...I checked out the Grace & Hillcrest location. [shown below] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/t9TawE.jpg Google_Earth I didn't expect to find the building (although that would have been great!), but I thought there might be some clues. I didn't find any. So now it's up to you sleuths. :superwhip . |

Could this be our mystery building in 1941? I've added an enlargement at the right. Even if it is, it still gives no clue to its purpose. https://i809.photobucket.com/albums/...Inglewood1.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu |
:previous: e_r and Hoss . . .
The old Daniel Freeman home was in the middle of the Grace Avenue block, and probably is the rather grand building seen to the right in Hoss's pic; perhaps these smaller buildings are outbuildings of that extensive home...? https://i.postimg.cc/XvPLT6y4/Freeman11-16-30.jpg LA Times 11/16/1930 via ProQuest via CSULB Library, much edited, unelucidative pic of patio garden excised |
