Cities That Have NEVER Hosted an Olympics that SHOULD in the Future

My List:

NYC; CHICAGO; SAN FRANCISCO; SEATTLE; DENVER; MIAMI; BOSTON; PHILADELPHIA; TORONTO; BUENOS AIRES; SAO PAULO; SANTIAGO; MADRID; ST. PETERSBURG; COPENHAGEN; VIENNA; WARSAW; PRAGUE; MILAN; MUMBAI; SHANGHAI; HONG KONG; OSAKA; NAGOYA; CAPE TOWN and/or JO'BURG

Chicago was supposed to host the 1904 Olympics.

But the little shits down in St. Louis stole it from us.

So we repaid the debt by beating them in everything else.

(except baseball)

I agree with that list. Unfortunately, I will only see a few in my lifetime.

Detroit was a runner up in 1968 and lost to Mexico City.

It's a shame too, because landing the Olympics may have really aided in the city's recovery from the 1967 riots and, thus, helped to stem the city's decline.

I would love for them to host one some time in the future, maybe even a joint international game with Windsor.

But you do have two baseball teams so it kind of evens itself out

Istanbul, Tehran, Mumbai, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Lagos...

If the olympics is truly global, North America and Europe could stand to take a break from hosting.

Those countries are the only ones that can repeatedly afford to host the Olympics. For everyone else, it's a huge financial loss and the venues either go abandoned and fall apart or get torn down, if not both. Here in the US and Canada, most of them are already built and just need a touch up along with just a few new venues.

It's why, although you can't trust the IOC, they should have some kind of endowment/fund sent up to pay for facilities in countries where they can't build their own facilities.

I'll echo that the Olympics need to be global, to represent the rings for each continent that is its logo for starters.

Top candidates:

Cape Town/ Johannesburg for Africa (SA has already held the world's biggest sporting event, the World Cup), and would symbolise the last ring

Istanbul (top runner for first Islamic country to host), maybe Cairo or Dubai

Bangkok/ Singapore - first for SE Asia

Warsaw/ Prague/ Budapest - first for Eastern Europe (outside Russia)

Delhi (already held the Commonwealth Games) - first for the Indian subcontinent

Other cities:

NYC, Toronto, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Madrid, Tehran, San Francisco, Lima, Bogota

Detroit is a one industry town, that had every bit as much to do with its decline as did the weather.

Istanbul makes sense if the political situation improves. Cairo would be great, if they can use the Olympics to help the people by building housing. Finding funds to build venues will be a challenge. Poverty is a challenge, but Rio did host and it worked out. Cape Town (which I had on my list) does have a water problem, which they will solve, but has a great setting. Jo'burg would of course co-host being the largest city in SA. Budapest is also a natural choice in eastern Europe. Lyon might make a good host, although the metro population might be on the lower side but many millions live within a nearby area. In Germany, Berlin will probably get a second games some day (2036?) to redo the 1936 games without the bad vibes of the Nazi era. How about Hamburg?

Most likely future choices (because of financial resources, good transportation etc.): New York City, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Denver, Shanghai, Osaka, Hong Kong, Copenhagan/Malmo

Houston and Dallas might make good host cities. Summer heat and thunderstorms could be beat with retractable roofs on the stadiums. Detroit is on the resurgence, so I don't rule out a future bid.

It’s an expensive and highly complex logistical exercise, so Europe, North America and now East Asia are still most equipped to do it.

I can’t even imagine how much of a mess an Olympics in Lagos or Mumbai would be. Maybe in another 100 years.

And who would fund that endowment?

There’s enough debate about whether it’s worthwhile for a city/country to host an Olympics. Any mayor or head of state who approved funding an Olympics elsewhere should be immediately impeached.

Yeah Chicago 2016 would have been awesome.

So as not to repeat what's already been said I'd like to see the winter Olympics go to Finland. Lack of a high enough mountain has always been the issue but I'd still like to see it in Helsinki. Have the downhill in another country. Quebec City and Santiago are 2 other potential sites.

For summer Olympics I'd like to see them in Vancouver but only after Toronto has had them first.

If they want to do an Islamic country I would think Tehran or Istanbul, Cairo or Dubai are too uncomfortable for summer Olympics unless the committee lets them have the games in March

IrishIllini Feb 11, 2018 3:47 PM

Very conflicted on the Olympics. Feels like a red herring to me. The infrastructure improvements would be nice.
