odinthor, what that article on Mrs. Kerckhoff failed to mention was her fondness for Cubism.

More on Marcell.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/kCj7ko.jpg It turns out, the Marcell Inn sign was found.... "under wood siding, sheathing the back wall of a garage behind a Victorian Cottage in north-central Pasadena." You can read all about the discovery below. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Ug73tr.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/aMNRsn.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/GC8XXl.jpg The only thing missing in this article is the street address of the "Victorian cottage" :( (the one with the garage behind it) __ Found at altadenahistoricalsociety |

I'm just being nit-picky...the "Hollywood the Unusual" film was discussed being on DVD, which I did not remember, but it wasn't yet on youtube then, so I hadn't seen it! (And was glad to do so.) At first I thought the director (William Taylor) might have been the infamous William "Desmond" Taylor, but the film was made several years after his notoriety. Did I ever mention I saw his signature in a Hotel del Coronado guest book that was in their lobby museum space? |
Another Perry Mason house...this one a mystery
The elaborate gates to it seem to be at the end of a straight street with comparatively ordinary though not humble houses lining it... https://i.postimg.cc/nhLVGyWS/pmmysteryhouse100-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Y9QtSM40/pmmysthse102-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/hPDKSFK4/pmmysthse103-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/FRpnpB8G/pmmysteryhse101-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/mrNdZnLR/pmmysthouse101a-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/CdTDqF72/pmmysthse104gate-bmp.jpg CBS |
That one is pretty easy. That's 1847 Camino Palmero Street adjacent to Runyon Canyon. Also used as the guys' mansion in Season 1/2 of the HBO show Entourage.

I don't believe we have seen this matchbook on NLA.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/KLvcw7.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/8ElsOu.jpg EBAY I wondered why the address was missing the street number, then realized it's hidden in the dominoes. sooo.... the number ..is...65043(?)....or..is it....1107(?) What do you guys think? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Earlier on NLA we spied a "Lucky Spot" in this mystery photograph. (from 2016) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/FYPPej.jpg But as Hoss showed us below, this isn't N. Western. Quote:

Here's a Lucky Spot on Crenshaw... https://i.postimg.cc/65H2fbgp/lucky2-bmp.jpg LAT Dec 22 1930 (This item was among a long list of home invasions, car thefts, beatings, robbery etc...the kind of reportage that you can always find in LA papers back to 1850 that belies the Leave it to Beaver idea many have of its past....) https://i.postimg.cc/ZYxV4ZBs/lucky1-bmp.jpg LA Sentinel Nov 13, 1958 |

The 1938, 1939 and 1940 directories have a listing for the Lucky Spot Cafe on N Western Ave. The 1939 has it at 1105 but the other two list 1107. https://i.imgur.com/pm5QVaU.jpg rescarta.lapl.org |

You beat me to it, Noir_Noir. I'm not sure where the "Paul" and "Alex" come from. There was a John A Alexander and Paul Moggoria connected to the cafe, but that's as close as I got. |

I couldn't find that we ever determined what those buildings were just east of the Coliseum's peristyle end. If the buildings are being built, the photo is likely from May or June 1923. If they're being torn down, the photo is probably from August or September 1923. In any event, the event they were built for was the Monroe Doctrine Centennial, American Historical Review and Motion Picture Exhibition, which ran from July to August 1923 (the last day was actually August 5, not the 4th): http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9ogjymop.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psy7c1jx3i.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psaioclyzp.jpg Jul 2, 1923, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LAPL http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psybni4s4r.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8r76ha1t.jpg Jul 6, 1923, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LAPL http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psvhgeqaib.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psa07evtn1.jpg Jul 20, 1923, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LAPL Here is an article from the April 1923 edition of The American Cinematographer that describes the upcoming exhibition. Read more about the exhibition here and also here. 2021 UPDATE: While idling scrolling through past posts, I noticed that e_r seems to have posted a west-facing photo of the exhibition grounds back in 2017, though the photo caption misidentifies the location as Long Beach (00074899 at LAPL). The old grandstand below on the left clearly matches the one on the right side of the east-facing aerial photo: Quote:

Thanks Hoss, GaylordWilshire and Noir_Noir for your fine sleuthing re: the Lucky Spot Cafe https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/PhWuBg.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/4zTiZ4.jpg I searched & searched for an old photograph of the 1100 block of N. Western hoping to catch a glimpse of the Lucky Spot Cafe.. butno such luck. I did find this Lucky Spot Cafe in Sacramento. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/YhO7EZ.jpg calisphere That's a neat old pool hall too. (but it isn't Los Angeles) _ |
A while back I happened upon this photograph at Bizarre Los Angeles
It was labeled: "I'm guessing that this is Pico Blvd., around 1960." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/mSpw9A.jpg facebook/birarrela (it's quite possible we have previously seen this photo on NLA) Unfortunately, no one looked any further into the address. Does anyone know if this is Pico? Can anyone make out what it says directly below the Pepsi logo? -pretty sure it says Free Parking just below it. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/HYGT2a.jpg DETAIL I bet that young girl is returning home from running an errand. __ |
