The Portland at 444-1/2 S. Spring Street
 

It's not entirely clear to me, but it appears 444-1/2 is in 446-450 S. Spring, rather than in 442-444, on the
1906 Sanborn Map below. Please note the Barker Bros. building at far right (north is also on the right):

Here are some of the the buildings on the 1906 Sanborn, from Barker Bros. south. We're looking north on Spring
from 5th, c. 1903. Was the Portland in the building at far right with the bay windows (446-450), or was it in the
building to the north with the flat windows (442-444)? Perhaps the Portland comprised the upper floors of both
buildings:

look in the middle above the woman on the bike ("444 1/2 - The Portland - Furnished Rooms"):

This is roughly the same view from 1939. It appears that 446 through 452 S. Spring from the 1906 Sanborn
have been torn down and replaced with the parking lot south of the Bette Davis billboard. There is also a
parking lot between the Delta Bldg. (426) and 438-440 S. Spring:

It looks like the Christmas photo I picked out may come from the same set as the second that Martin Pal posted above, although the sources and dates differ.

1920 - Bathers sit on the sand with a "blow-up" alligator on their laps as they open presents in front of the Christmas tree on a beach in Long Beach.

I just finished fixing the broken image links in my old posts that resulted from Photobucket's betrayal of its userbase this past year. All of my files now reside safe and sound on my own private hosting.

The updates don't affect the old links that were quoted in other people's posts, of course, but at least my original contributions here have been restored.

I thought it would be a tedious task, but I actually enjoyed it. It reminded me of all the fun I had on this thread back in the early days.

If Photobucket wanted to end 3rd Party linkage they could have just stopped it [and let the previous pics remain.]. But no, they made a vicous and very unethical decision to double-cross and back-stab millions of their customers by simply making millions of customer's photos go black. If you want PB to 3rd party link...it'll now cost you $400 per year. From free to $400 a year.

Nice find, that does look like the same location...the posts on the beach etc. Maybe they did something similar every year, hence the different dates.
