It's too bad about that mall. When CT/Sportchek/Atmosphere went in, it seemed to really perk up the whole mall. I think turning it into a gym and health centre could kill the rest of the mall.

A gym would bring more people to the property tho. If I had to choose between visiting two malls, I would go to the property that had my gym at it over the other. I do agree the current “medical” leasing focus is more of a snore fest for the excitement of the property development growth. They need more retail. I always thought a hotel at the back corner of the property by Cineplex would work well.

I went to Goodlife Fitness for almost 3 years before the pandemic, both locations. I can count on one hand hand how many times I stopped in either Vic Square or Golden Mile, excluding Superstore or places with food. Shopping is definitely not something I like doing after doing a workout. But that's just me.

Vic Square isn't really a sought after shopping destination in the first place, but they were very smart to secure Goodlife. When I am in Regina I work out at the Golden Mile Goodlife each day and I would frequent the Booster Juice and Superstore almost every time. My point is, the more food, theatre, clothing, gym, and grocery options on the same property the better for drawing more people. I am still hoping Cornwall Centre can solidify Goodlife for the remainder of the main floor Sears space.

Ya, for sure. Foot traffic is foot traffic and gyms are better than empty space.

That's my thought too. The gym is a destination. I'm going there and home. I'm not tacking on extra running around.

It’s hard enough pulling myself there as it is :haha:

Request is going to council to rezone the former Costco for an Auto Gallery dealership. That will ensure it continues to be a dead zone.

Thoughts? The Spot looks like it might as well be an addition to the library and The Park looks lacking for a mall kids attraction (PS where will Santa now go?). I am wondering about The Spot, which could be an interesting element if built well for smaller vendors.

I don’t find this project exciting at all BUT a Planet Fitness would be. :)

Thanks for posting this update. It's as exciting as watching someone blowing their nose

As you know, shopping malls across North America are trying to reinvent themselves, so I give Southland/Strathallen kudos for trying. I doubt these improvements will draw many (any?) additional visitors to the mall though. They haven't invested much money into these lame ideas, so if they work, great (but I doubt it). If not, I hope they try harder next time :uhh:

Agreed on the nose blowing comment haha!

I think the concept could sort of work, but honestly that looks like they put about 1/8th the amount of work necessary to make a difference.

Southland's management typically requires tenants (even day tenants) to have $5 million commercial liability coverage, so if that requirement extends to community groups, that will significantly reduce the appeal of the space, even if otherwise free.

Not sure if this has been posted, but a candy store is opening on the FW Hill Mall.

$5M is pretty standard now for all rentals and doesn't really cost much.

Having been involved in non-profits over the past several years, meeting space like this is desperately needed (the United Way has free space for community groups, and it's very well-used) - having said this, the devil's in the details: hard easy is it to book? what are the requirements (insurance, etc)? hours of availability (many community groups rely on volunteers who are often only available evenings & weekends... possible hours that the mall isn't open); etc.

I'm an insurance broker. I get people looking for this coverage.

$5M limits for most businesses start at about $750/year, which is considerable for a non-profit or community organization unless it's of a decent size.

I'm talking mostly about rentals of properties, not one-off events. It's a minuscule amount compared to rent. Even then I don't think that's a big cost for most organizations.
