Depends on what sect of Buddhism you ask. If you ask the Mayahana Buddhists from Tibet, they're going to say that building giant golden Buddhas is an excellent tradition because the Buddha would be pleased to see such statues being used to enlighten people. However, if you asked a Buddhist from a more conservative sect like Theravada, they would say that one should not concentrate on material objects like a golden statue and that one must meditate internally on their own.
