There is a MRT beneath the Gate of Taipei which is airport line.

Razqal Sep 6, 2008 10:32 PM

i hope they keep that little park. and even expand it. the city needs more green open space and trees cuz it's so polluted and dense.

ed21x Sep 6, 2008 11:46 PM

eh? i live in manhattan right now, feel free to come by if you want to see dense and polluted. after living here, going to taipei is a breath of very fresh air. and besides, have you ever stopped complaining about taiwan?

i'm originally from nyc too. if you live in manhattan than you should know central park takes up a huge chunk of manhattan and just a subway ride from any part of the island. and there's other squares and smaller parks that dot the island and very well maintained, e.g., madison square park, gramercy park, cloisters, battery park etc. not to mention flushing meadows, brooklyn botanical, bronx botanical, etc. in the other boroughs. and the air in nyc is generally better than in taipei. having those parklands definitely help.

i complain about nyc and los angeles too, btw. :D

ed21x Sep 11, 2008 3:23 AM

ahh... in that case, as long as every place gets criticized equally :) One thing that I've noticed about Taiwanese people is that they tend to criticize Taiwan disproportionately compared to people from other cities, and there is a general lack of civic pride... although it is getting better now. And yeah, you're right, NYC does have alot of designated parks and nice areas. However, the places that are NOT nice are also dangerous, which is a main factor that makes Taipei (and Taiwan for that matter) appealing. No matter how run down a place is, it is still safe to walk around in. I would take the most run down places of Taipei over the Bronx, Harlem, Long Beach, South Central LA any day of the week.

I do not want to say about air or environmentm, but I suppose that New York and Taipei are totally different cities. New York is traditional western style city and Taipei is similar to Japanese cities. It is hard to say which city is better. In some particular areas, for example public transport. Taipei MRT is one the best MRTs in the world. But you can say that New York has one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. It's really just depended on which point you are looking.

Street vendor is an interesting thing. Most Aisan cities have street vandor. In Taiwan, is night market.
Here is a report I find from internet:

it's time that the dated taipei main station is renovated. whole the urban environment around is evolving...

Nothing going on, the original plan for Maki's towers is still in the works. William's post is not one but actually three completely unrelated projects; Central Park, The Gate of Taipei, and the TDC business center near the corner of Zhongshan. I've listed them according to architect in the "Downtown" thread. ;)

Construction of the Gate of Taipei can only begin after the bus station has been relocated to itaipei. My best guess would be sometime in early 2010.

Australiasian Nov 3, 2008 10:45 AM

hurry up already!
