If only this amazing monument had been built!

"A huge monument to commemorate the start of the army's round-the-world flight in 1924 from Clover Field, Santa Monica Calif., and serve as a beacon to guide flyers
to the field, is being projected by Geoffrey F. Morgan, and has enthusiastic backing. The model of the monument, to rival the Statue of Liberty, was completed by
Murrell(?) Gage....and daughter are showing."

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...537/gjs62l.jpg

I wonder where the beacon (the actual light) would have been located...atop the globe?..or perhaps within the globe if the globe was glass (so cool).
_______________

While driving the perimeter of Santa Monica/Clover Field Airport in the google-mobile, I came across this 'mystery' structure in the southwestern corner of the airport.

Is it an old radar installation? or perhaps old support beams, from what used to be a gas tank?

Or how about an abandoned foundation for an over-sized monument to rival the Statue of Liberty? ;) (I'm kidding)

Here's an aerial.

Maybe HossC (or someone) can dig up some old aerials of the airport.;)

I haven't had a chance to Google what it is, but it's been there since sometime between 1952 and 1964 (below). The sharp corners on Dewey Street have been rounded off over the years.

Speaking of monuments.

This 1,100 ft. "Angel Tower" by artist Brett-Livingston Strong was 'supposed' to rise at 3rd Street and Bixel.

old file / also found at http://la.curbed.com/archives/2010/0...or_the_101.php

Why 3rd and Bixel of all places? I do not know.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...901/xVngk6.jpg
old file of mine

"Mr. Strong designed a 350 ft. Angel sculpture to sit on a 750 ft. tower-of-babel-esque platform that would house galleries, shops,
several nondenominational chapels, a 5,000 seat concert hall and a revolving theme restaurant."

"That's a total of 1,100 ft. total, taller than the Library Tower which would have made it the new tallest structure west of the Mississippi."

http://la.curbed.com/archives/2010/0...or_the_101.php

You can file this one under 'pipe dreams'.

I found the same picture on pinterest.com. In the comments, Alison Martino says "It's Boss in 1967- Sunset strip / Ciro's prior", and beachgal adds "Ciro's on Sunset (Hollywood) became a teen rock club during the summer of love in 1967 called "It's Boss" - A popular hangout for The Byrds, Sonny & Cher, The Lovin Spoonful and The Bobby Fuller Four."

There's a photographer named Luke Luqueer listed in the 1942 CD. His address is given as 9023 Beverly Boulevard. There's also a Frank S Luqueer listed in various sales roles between 1917 and 1942. He seems to have been married to Gertrude E Luqueer, and Jeanne Luqueer appears in the later CDs at the same address as Frank and Gertrude.

It seems to be a real surname. They appear to have been well known in aviation circles in that era. That may be why we see the airplanes in the card.

The opening sequence of 'Repo Man', which is episode 14 of the second season of 'CHiPs', takes place around this area. It was first shown in January 1979, so I'm guessing it was filmed in 1978. The scenario is that a busload of misbehaving schoolkids cause their driver to have a heart attack, leaving one of the kids to try and steer the bus. The first recognizable location is Silver Lake Boulevard at Duane Street.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilverLake1.jpg

Here's roughly the same view from 2012.

The bus carries on past Effie Street.

The 7-Eleven is still there, although the design has changed a little.

After telling the kid at the wheel to follow the white line, Jon turns for Sunset Boulevard.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilverLake5.jpg

The "Tom's Burgers" sign was still visible until at least October of 2014.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilverLake6.jpg
GSV

Here's Tom's Burgers. It was on the site of Roy Shambeau's Silver Lake Service Station at 2861 Sunset Boulevard, as seen in Tourmaline's post.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilverLake7.jpg
MGM TV/Rosner TV

The signs for Tom's Burgers have gone in the most recent GSV image (below), but can still be seen up until 2014. I believe the "Liquor" sign in the background is the same as the one in the 1978 image above.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilverLake8.jpg

The scene finishes shortly after Jon makes a daring jump onto the bus from the bridge. How lucky that there was a crew working on the bridge from a suitably-placed platform!

I can't see much that changed here since filming.
