Very possible Wilder was inspired by the Lang/Bennett affair, but I don't think he ever conceded that was the case.

This part of the tale is perhaps apocryphal, but man is it good:

Joan Bennett allegedly screamed at Wanger as he approached, gun in hand, the caught-red-handed Lang: “For God’s Sake, Walter, he’s only an agent!”

By the way, this slide was taken by the same person that took the photograph of the gate building.

"Combining Good Citizenship With Good Picture Making." ....Well that's a mouthful....No doubt to placate McCarthyism.

.

That sign was located on a triangular island located at the point where Olive Avenue meets Pass and before it becomes Barham Blvd. the streets have been re-aligned and the island is no longer there. There is an Warner Brothers office building there now. Ads for current movies used to be on that sign and it was a landmark.

Thanks for the information, oldstuff. :)

RECENTLY LISTED ON EBAY.

Here's an amazing cabinet card of a large home in the Westlake District. [no date]

I am especially intrigued by the large billboards in the yard!

The only reason I can think of (for the signs being in the yard). . .is that the house faced Westside Park and the billboards are positioned to seen by the park goers.

Look at the size of Warner Bros. Studios, and then compare it to the size of Walt Disney Studios.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/CjdNie.jpg

It looks like it would take SIX (or more) Walt Disney Studios to fill up the same area as Warner Bros.

I had no idea there was such a difference. (in 1944)

.

If you think Disney is small, extend your aerial a bit (if you can), and look at Universal next to WB. Both WB and Disney would fit in their property a few times over.

While it's true that Disney did(n't) need much soundstage space, they also own the Prospect studios in Los Feliz (former ABC studios), and the ranch in Santa Clarita which has plans to build new soundstages. The new ABC-7 location in Glendale has stages, but limited for that station's use.

That's the other Winston Churchill, the American novelist. The play was an adaptation of his novel of the same name, set in Missouri as the Civil War approached.

Cheers,

Earl

I believe this was 1919 W Seventh Street--moved in 1912 to a lot at 662 S Kingsley, where it appears to have been stored before moving more
permanently later in 1912 to 3185 W Tenth...i.e., Olympic between Hobart & Serrano. (The Dresden Apartments are at 1919 W Seventh now...
we've seen them here on NLA before.) The thing about this move to 10thSt/Olympic...according to BPs, the house did find its way to 3185 W 10th.
But... the Sanborn profile of of 1919 doesn't match the building (once) at 3185 W 10th...see the pic below.

The Sanborn depisctions don't match...so what happened to 1919 W 7th?

I'm embarrassed to admit it, Earl, but I didn't know there was an American author named Winston Churchill.

His book, The Crisis, was the best selling book in the United States in 1901.

The Crisis was also one of the issues of Classics Illustrated.

You can read more about him at Forgotten Fiction

While I was looking for more information on Churchill's 'The Crisis, I happened upon this advertisement in the Dec. 16, 1916 issue of the Los Angeles Herald.

What caught my attention was. . ."Not a Motion Picture."

Whoa! 100 People...100 Horses, Camels Arabs.

I didn't think the Mason Opera House was large enough to contain a show of this magnitude.

I hope there are photographs of this extravaganza in a theatrical archives somewhere.....Would a production this large still be considered vaudeville?

We're indeed looking south, e-r, down the west roadway of Long Beach Ave. at Vernon Ave.

The street sign yielded the name of the cross street when I magnified your original, stuck my face near the screen and squinted really hard.

Looking at the left edge of the original view, we can see that there's an industrial-size incinerator marking the far side of the east roadway; and we can barely make out some rails. The extreme width of the right-of-way between the roadways tells us that this is the PE's "four tracks", which ran in the median of Long Beach Ave.

A quick check in the Googlemobile shows that, other than the former PE right-of-way (now the Metro A Line and a UP secondary freight line), nothing remains of this scene today.

ER, when I saw the aerial you posted I was looking for something else...my house on Niagara St., where I've live since '81. It was built in '29 and I think I spotted it after downloading and enlarging your image. It's indicated by the red arrow:

https://i.imgur.com/19s1DkY.jpg

Where did you grab that from? I've seen old aerials of Burbank that showed my neighborhood before, but none this sharp. Maybe if I go to your source I can zoom in further and see it more clearly.

Niagara Street is lined with very large pine trees on both sides and even in this old image, they are quite obvious. My house is now the seventh one south where my block ends, on Verdugo. I believe that Niagara was one of the first residential streets to be developed in this part of Burbank.

Also, I'm curious about the large lots with the "striped" areas, which would be between Hollywood Way and California St. I guess they are fields that had been planted with something but they look odd, almost a little too perfect. I wonder what that was exactly.

The Warner Bros. Ranch lot is west, on the other side of Hollywood Way, above the upper edge of your image.

Fascinating to see this...it made my day!
