The North By Northwest lady was Nora Marlowe (who was married to James McCallion, an unfamiliar name, but he also was on numerous TV series episodes). It's interesting to look over the many single-episode credits these actresses had in TV series of the 1950-1970s! Westerns, Sci-Fi, Comedy, etc. etc. I began to list them to include here, but there are so very very many... |

My Grandmother worked at Bullocks Downtown, sometime in 1957 she started working for the Candy Family. The first house she worked at for the Candy's was located on San Vincente in Santa Monica/Brentwood area. She also help keep the Apartment the Candy's had on Wilshire near the LA Country Club. The last location of the Candy's was in Malibu. Walter Candy (Mr. Candy) was the President of the I-Magnin/Bullocks chain. He married Kate Winnett, who's father P.G. was co-founder of Bullock's.
As a kid i always wondered why our luggage had the initials KWC, i was told it was Granny's Luggage which just got me even more confused. Well it seems when the Candy's passed away in the mid 70's, Granny was responsible for the estate as the Candy's didn't have kids. We still have the full set of Mrs. Candy Louis Vuitton Luggage (and one Hartman piece belonging to Mr. Candy) that was purchased at Bullock's Wilshire.. and i do travel with it. https://i.postimg.cc/RZ9fmbFx/032.jpg Candy's Butler and Granny at Malibu Estate [IMG]https://i.postimg.cc/kGR1qT7K/034.jpg[/IMG] Aunt Delores doing her Nurse Training at the Candy's https://i.postimg.cc/X7HfQf30/028.jpg Mrs. Candy liked to drink and Granny became more of a paid friend (think Driving Mrs. Daisy)/ caregiver. All of the Lassie collie dogs in the TV series were actually male. Here's why. Because female collies tend to "blow coat" (go through a massive hormone-induced shedding process) with each fertility cycle. While males blow coat as well in reaction to a change in season, it is much less noticeable than what occurs with an intact female. https://i.pinimg.com/564x/82/fd/84/8...2ee18020c1.jpg 1955 - CBS One Fall day I riding my bike backstage at a local LA parade, when I suddenly came face to face with Tommy Rettig [above w/Lassie boy], much to my surprise, as I had no idea he was there. Tommy Rettig quote. ''When I found out it was my last season [1957] on "Lassie" I was ecstatic. I had gotten to the point where I really resented not being able to go out except on Saturday nights. Of course, when I did date girls their parents always trusted me because of my goody-goody TV image. The fools!'' His small size, 5'4'', made adult movie roles almost impossible to obtain. He was a brilliant computer software programmer and wrote several books on the topic. |

Didn't the woman who played "Phyllis" in the Mary Tyler Moore show (Cloris Leachman) play his (Rettig's) mom in "Lassie"? The 1960s Lassie mom was June Lockhart. I recall that Rettig also played a role in a film with Robert Mitchum & Marilyn Monroe called "The River of No Return" or something similar. He played Mitchum's son and Marilyn was a showgirl. All 3 went down the Snake River on a raft and all 3 hit it off. The Lassie boy got to meet Marilyn! Love to hear Rettig tell Marilyn stories and Mitchum stories. Bet he has a lot of stories. Marilyn Mitchum...that would have been a power couple. But Mitch probably didn't want to p.o. Joe D. Noirishers have a Happy T'giving. |

mystery location This amazing rppc of an apartment building in Los Angeles was just listed on eBay. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/sXESO1.jpg eBay Here is the reverse. (postmark 1915) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/zl0MzN.jpg I believe the long, underlined word at the bottom, on the right side, might be the name of the apt. building. I was curious about what was going on streetside. Let's take a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Jn88Be.png detail hmm. . .I guess the diagonal board has nothing to do with the pipes on the ground. The little bridge made me think of the zanjas that used to supply water. My guess is; they're planning on burying the pipes to replace the 'open air' zanja. Or maybe that isn't a zanja at all. . .it might just be a slight ditch. And. . .hmm. . .the diagonal board, that appears to be attached to a wire, is stabilizing the tree. (?) . |

Henriette Sweet and Jennie Lowe were partners in the sanitarium--it only opened in 1910, so didn't last long. Looks like they went their separate ways after the building was sold? and moved. Sweet was next listed at 1805 W 5th St, but if the building was moved there, it's gone. On a quick look couldn't find any BPs to trace its movement. Hello. I am the author of the book about Randsburg, as well as the in-depth research about Emilie Brickett/French Marguerite. I was fully aware that Marguerite had visited Los Angeles. Evidence pointed to her being released from the asylum between late 1900 to 1902, whereupon she headed for Randsburg where her favorite sister lived. I have secured actual documents showing that she did indeed leave the asylum. Also, as I had already guessed, the reason given in the news was that she had epilepsy was a ruse. She was committed for other reasons. I have been in contact with a number of Emily/Marguerite's living relatives, as well as step-family members of Marguerite's son, August Roberts/Jarick. all who emailed or phoned me, confirming my evidence as true. They have also given me a copy of the only known photo of Emily/Marguerite. Due to the real reasons behind her committal, I have promised that I would not release that information publicly. I also have a certified copy of Emily/Marguerite's death certificate.

https://i.imgur.com/x5qR1rS.jpg rescarta.lapl.org Two excerpts from a Los Angeles Herald (5 November 1908) story. RUSHES INTO BLAZING BARN, SAVES CHILD "Manza Daniels, a mail carrier of Hollywood became the hero of a thrilling rescue of a child from an awful death by fire. Vernon Bliss, the beautiful 3-year-old son of H. G. Bliss, a photographer, narrowly escaped the terrible fate of being burned alive in a fire that the child had set and which consumed his father's barn and photographic studio at the rear of the residence at 747 El Centro Street. Colegrove, despite the fact that the Hollywood fire department quickly responded to the alarm. Daniels had been calling on some friends in the vicinity of the Bliss home and was passing the place when his attention was attracted by the voice of a child singing to the accompaniment of crackling flames. The man entered the yard, and as he turned the corner of the house he was transfixed with horror to see the child sitting with his little bare feet swinging out of the upper window of the hayloft and the red tongues of flames reaching up toward him from the lower part of the building." "A look at the child showed he was severely burned about the face, but Daniels' face and hands scarcely bore a mark, owing to his presence of mind in covering himself with his coat. The child also suffered from having inhaled smoke. Fire was carried by the wind to outbuildings In the vicinity and considerable damage resulted before it was extinguished. The Bliss child had been left in the care of his elder brother while the other members of the family were away from home. In some way the little one had obtained some matches and set fire to the building as a method of diversion during his loneliness. After he had the blaze comfortably under way, he decided it would be fun to ascend to the loft and there enjoy the bonfire he had started. So well pleased was Vernon with his idea and the progress of the blaze that he burst into the song which attracted the attention off the rescuer. The loss to the building and photographic material is estimated by Mr. Bliss at $400. He loses two valuable cameras, a large number of highly prized negatives and considerable photographic supplies. Vernon has decided that bonfires are no good and declares he will eschew such frivolities In the future. Mr. Daniels modestly denies any heroism and says he is not a candidate for a Carnegie medal for bravery." cdnc.ucr.edu - Los Angeles Herald - 5 November 1908 |

I see you noticed Sally Rand, too, JMR. I'll delete the photo from my post since it's right there above! ___ I don't think I knew Sally Rand was a WBS. She certainly has eyes for the Babe. I always heard Babe nicknamed The Sultan of Swat, instead of The King of Swat. Of course, he was so popular he had many nicknames: Babe, The Colossus of Clout, The Sultan of Swat, The Big Bam, The Behemoth of Bust, Jedge, The Caliph of Clout, The Wazir of Wham, The Maharajah of Mash, The Rajah of Rap, The Blunderbuss, The Mammoth of Maul, The Mauling Mastodon, The Mauling Monarch, The Wali of Wallop, The Prince of Powders, The King of Crash, The King of Clout, The Colossus of Crash, The King of Swing, The Terrible Titan, The Kid (or King) of Crash and, of course, The Great Bambino. (From: Babe Ruth Nicknames and The Story Behind Them) https://lostmediawiki.com/images/b/b...Lobby_Card.jpgLMW This is considered a lost film. It was released the day after Charles Lindbergh made his historic flight and landed in Paris, May 21, 1927. Ballpark scenes in the movie were filmed at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field. Speaking of Wrigley Field, recently I saw AMPAS's Hollywood Home Movies (online version for this year; premiered 11/20). They have done other Hollywood Home Movies programs in person at their theatre before. This new one has color scenes of Satchel Paige pitching in an exhibition game at Wrigley Field in November of 1948. (He had been part of the 1948 Cleveland Indians World Series winning team and is wearing his Indians uniform in this game.) It's noted this may be the only known footage of him pitching in a game. There are nice shots of the field and people in the stadium, including Louis B. Mayer and other M-G-M people. The footage was shot by Richard Brooks and they may have been there because they were doing a baseball themed film at the time. This WRIGLEY FIELD sequence is at approximately 32:47. If one is interested there is MUCH to enjoy in the entire presentation. (Among other things, there's footage of stars at play in Catalina, behind the scenes footage of a film, set in winter, being shot at the Greystone Mansion and a backyard party at Dolores Del Rio's place.) |

Not to be forgotten is native Angeleno Faith Bacon, granddaughter of retired industrialist Frank Page Bacon of 2615 Ellendale Place. https://i.postimg.cc/PrrhGXV0/faithbacon-bmp.jpg She starred as a fan dancer featured at Chicago's Century of Progress International Exposition of 1933-34; Faith had a running battle with the better-known Sally Rand as to who was the originator of the art, and even sued Sally for ripping off her shtick. Her Wikipedia entry: "In 1945, she and Sanford Hunt Dickinson—a Buffalo businessman and songwriter—applied for a marriage license. As Bacon was rumored to be gay, she may have sought a marriage of convenience. It is unknown whether they ever actually married; they never lived together, but also never divorced. According to Tullah Innes, a burlesque dancer who crossed paths with Faith frequently, Faith was a lesbian out of necessity as her mother kept her from men. Later in her life, as her work dried up, there were reports of heavy alcohol and drug use." She jumped out of a Chicago hotel window in 1956. |

I wonder if Sally had a fling with Babe Ruth? That pic above looks like she might have. Maybe some of the others too. Babe loved food, drink and the ladies. He loved life and never pretended to be a saint. His candle burned brightly but went out early. When the Babe was in L.A.he often golfed at the Griffith Park courses. Ruth was a very good golfer. Like his home runs, his drives off the tee went farther than others could hit them, and we're usually accurate. He also loved bowling, hunting and fishing. Babe couldn't remember the names of everyone he knew, so he called many people "kid" (pronounced "keed"), even some of his teammates. A fun loving human dynamo. Most everybody liked the Babe, except opposing pitchers. Babe was also kind to children, since he was basically a big "keed" himself. And probably the greatest all around baseball player ever. Started as a good pitcher who might have had a hall of fame pitching career, but he hit so we'll they put him in the outfield so he could hit every day and he broke all the slugging records. When he hit an amazing 29 home runs with the Red Sox in 1919, nobody could believe it (previous record was half that). The next year with the Yankees he hit 54, more than the rest of the team combined. Amazing. |
