The names of the fallen speak volumes about the changing demographic of L.A. over the span of a century. Not a single Hispanic name. Most are Anglo-Saxon-Celtic, but four are German.

This is Ice Capades at 6121 Santa Monica Boulevard. Julius Shulman visited this Stiles Oliver Clements building in 1953. Unsurprisingly, the title of the photoset is "Job 1619: Stiles Oliver Clements, Icecapades (Los Angeles, Calif.),1953".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Here's a different angle showing the entrance. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original A wider view of the building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Getty Research Institute The section of the building on the corner of Lodi Place has gained an extra story, and the palm trees have grown a bit, but otherwise the scene has stayed much the same. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV The small wall to the right of the entrance has been removed sometime in the last 62 years. This angle also shows how high the palm trees have grown. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV I'll finish with this advert from the September 22, 1956 edition of Billboard. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original books.google.com |

"Special dinners"...I wonder what they were?
Edit to add: Sorry...this was supposed to be in response to a long-ago post but the quote didn't show up. Never mind... |
I enjoyed the GREAT photos of Bunker Hill recently. I'm not on here every day so I don't know if this has been discussed but I see that ONE BUNKER HILL was recently bought this past week by same group that recently remodeled PacMutual Bldg, promising upgrades for the old Edison Building now. http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/u...2db9fb853.html

I bet a dollar that it's a paste-up Tthe 1930s version of photoshop. The Zep appears to be a model and heavily retouched. Cut it out, glue it on and re--photo the montage. But I'll take good photo special effects over CGI most days |

Those symbols were not on the GZ rudders in '29. It was not until a certain dictator assumed control (1933+) that the markings were added. ;) 1929 mines field and a big 'ol dirigible http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/o...pspuihxoy6.png USCDigital 1929 issue Graf Zeppelin stamp https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...1930_issue.jpghttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...1930_issue.jpg |
I may have run out of Bank of America branches photographed by Julius Shulman, but I found a branch of Citizens National Bank that I don't think we've seen before. It was located at 10925 Kinross Avenue in Westwood. Just like yesterday's Ice Capades building, this is another Stiles Oliver Clements design. It's "Job 1618: Stiles Oliver Clements, Citizens Bank (Los Angeles, Calif.),1953".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original A closer view. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The photoset also includes this interior shot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The building survives as Bel Air Camera, although the clean lines of the original have been slightly compromised by the addition of two heavy horizontal bars. The stonework on the corner now accommodates three ATMs. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV The building continues back along Gayley Avenue. It's not clear from the Shulman pictures whether the bank originally had a side entrance. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV |

[QUOTE=Flyingwedge;7205836]This is a pre-1930 aerial view looking NE at the 1917 Los Angeles High School. North across what is now Olympic Blvd.,
in the upper left corner, is Memorial Park, future site of the Memorial Branch Library: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...r.jpg~original UCLA Interesting that in the 1920s it appears a soccer field or at least a penalty area has been marked out on the field. Was anyone in California playing soccer then? |

Here's a close-up of the Graf Zeppelin. (fake or real?) -real but superimposed? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...905/tOr2gB.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...d/20263/rec/15 And here's a close-up of the insignias on the tail-fins. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...910/sZibmo.jpg detail I don't recognize them. Do they ring a bell for anyone? Now let's look at what's on the ground in the center of the photograph (initially I thought it was a movie theater / now I'm leaning toward a gas station) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...633/4vzpDx.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...d/20263/rec/15 Frustratingly, I can't make out any of the lettering on the signs, especially the white lettering on black. Could it be 'lorem ipsum' (gibberish fill-in)? -that would prove some doctoring has been done. I think Ed, Earl and BRR made some excellent points. Does anyone know if Dick Whittington manipulated any other photographs? __ |
I think it definitely is a model made for some movie. Not only are the fins slightly the wrong, but in the real GZ the control surface hinges and actuating horns are quite prominent. Also, when the swastikas were added they were large, in a white circle on red background, and in the middle of the fins. I could locate no pictures that would indicate that there were ever any markings on the aft outboard tips of the fins.
Here's a picture of the aft end of the real thing: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5305/...22a2f218_b.jpgGraf Zeppelin, LZ127 by Wolfgang Wiggers, on Flickr Note the differences. Cheers, Earl |

I really thought the 1964 slide (shown below) was taken in a lobby. (mostly because of the lighting) So I appreciate the clarification sopas...Hoss...etc. -that the mural was actually outside. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/61CMus.jpg eBay Here are a couple close-ups. So what I thought might be lorem ipsum (dummy text) is ornamental grill-work with indirect lighting. (right?) __ |
:previous:
I thought it might me neon on the grill-work, but it could be indirect lighting. I tried to get a later picture, but so far I've only progressed to October 21, 1933. At least it shows the large Van de Kamps windmill which wasn't in the earlier shot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Detail of picture in Huntington Digital Library |
Photo verity was probably not as sacrosanct as we tend to think of it today. The answer to ER's question regarding photo manipulation may exist in the notes connected with the Liemert Park night photo, i.e., "composit[e]".
