I agree with your first point, but the second is just talking silly now.

Seems like the cities in Texas keep growing and growing and growing. I wish St. Louis could borrow just a little of that kind of growth. Houston looks really urban in these photos. I've been to Dallas (very burbish), but Houston looks a lot more urban. Is it comparable to Dallas?

SLO Jan 27, 2009 4:50 AM

^^Houston feels very similar a bit bigger, but Dallas has multiple skylines too spread through the suburbs/galleria/Las Colinas, and then Fort Worth is not far 30miles or so. The difference between downtown Dallas and Houston is probably 2-3 tall towers.

Houston has more towers and more urban than Dallas but, yes its still comparable to Dallas.

I think it's more than that. Houston's downtown core seems to encompass a larger area and just has a more urban feel to it. There is also a certain grittiness and greater multicultural presence to Houston that gives its downtown a bigger city vibe. Though neither currently (and likely never will given how and when the two cities developed) has a downtown that is as vibrant and truly urban as many smaller US cities, I hope both continue to increase their downtown densities.

Your first statement is correct. The second one is way off course.

Downtown Houston is more on par with Downtown LA than Dallas.

I agree it is, but add 2 or 3 towers to Dallas and its right there, not much difference.

Dallas will need more towers than that to be with Houston and L.A.

SLO Jan 30, 2009 1:30 AM

I am not a Houston hater, I like Houston, but Dallas is not far behind, I submit this Dallas thread for review by TexasStar, take the downtown pics and add 2-3 tall towers and Dallas is right there. LA is a bit denser than both of them, but were talking skylines.

downtown houston and downtown dallas are more alike than either are to LA unless we are strictly talking about tall buildings then all three are fairly similar. downtown LA is in a different league than either houston or dallas in total density downtown.

I'm not denying the density of DT LA & surrounding areas, but Houston has more tall buildings in its CBD. DT Dallas simply can't compete with either of those two cities, sorry...Dallas is more on par with skylines like Seattle & Minneapolis.

DT Dallas only looks larger than it really is because Uptown is so close by.

You are denying. You are right though Seattle & Minneapolis are just a half step behind those three.

Now, please, more incredible pics of H-town....

Photolitherland, regarding the photo of Uptown taken from up high somewhere in downtown, do you have one that shows Williams Tower from that vantage point?

KevinFromTexas Mar 22, 2009 5:37 AM

Photolitherland, please include the source of those photos. The photographer's name and where you found them, (if they aren't your's).

Midtown/Fourth Ward looking toward Uptown at dusk.

That still is a phenomenal photo. Wish I were lurking about the garages at the right time to get such shots

urbanactivist Apr 9, 2009 5:24 AM

I think Dallas and Houston are pretty comparable. Many of the buildings share some stylistic similarities. Both cities also suffered the same fate in their downtowns... lots of of activity up through the 40s, then a near death experience in the 50s and 60s, boomtown resurgence in the 70s 80s, and now a SLOW but steady revitalization period. Both cities have very similar development patterns, so it makes sense that they look similar as well.

Los Angeles is really the original model for "sprawl metros", and since it started recovering sooner than the Texas cities, the density is much more developed there. The only big mistake in LA is that they waited so long to revive their rail transit system.

latennisguy Apr 10, 2009 1:16 AM

:previous: Interesting. but it has absolutely NOTHING to do with Incredible Photos of Houston. Please remove your comments and replace them with a photo of Houston instead.

Based on the buildings on the edge of downtown that are visible in the photo, it looks like possibly early 70s. Most of that area is filled in now, thank goodness.
