^ HOLY SHIT!

SLO Apr 29, 2008 10:00 PM

^^Thats a great picture, it really shows all the great highrises and shows how much potential there is, with all the vacant land around downtown. The density takes a nosedive right outside the CBD. Is there any major condo construction around downtown?

There was a similar photo floating around the internet of Austin like that. It showed downtown from the south looking over the river with the new police helicopter flying over downtown. I saved it, but that hard drive bit the dust, and I haven't been able to find the photo again since. I really regret it. It was perfect, like frame it and hang it good.

Houston has some stunning skyscrapers but it's skyline for me it isn't the 3rd one in the US , I do like Minneapolis more

Yeah, its funny here Dallas and FW, both have big medical districts, all the hospitals congregate along with medical office buildings.

Minneapolis may be your third favorite US skyline, but they are talking about number of buildings. In that, Houston comes third behind NYC and Chi.

SLO May 12, 2008 12:38 AM

^After New York and Chicago theres a distinct dropoff to #3. Houston is not a clear #3, it depends on what you are talking about. Houston is probably the next tallest average, but SF is much denser and has way more buildings over 15 stories than H-town, just not quite as tall. Miami is right in there as well, and may be 3rd tallest average right now, easily if you count Miami Beach....but theres a lot of good skylines out there of which Minneapolis is definitely one.

latennisguy May 12, 2008 8:47 PM

Not sure if it matters that there is a distinct drop off at three, because Houston still sits there.

Keep the pictures coming...

I'd agree on your comment, LA, Houston, and even Dallas are similar with spread out multiple skylines....

Dallas' skylines look nothing like Houston's or LA's. The landscape (take out the mountains), is what makes Houston and LA similar.

ugh...I can't believe i'm taking the bate. but, here's L.A. and Houston side by side. Now, after this let's stop it with the comparisons.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4.../lahouston.jpg

they both look good IMO. None better than the other.

SLO May 14, 2008 3:33 AM

Wow, now that puts it in perspective. Desktop material there.

That Houston freeway looks a bit puny though.....;) Only kidding...
That is really cool though......

Metro Matt May 14, 2008 6:14 AM

Sweet!

The one of LA though is taken from an angle that makes it appear dense. A better & denser view of Houston for comparison sake would have been a shot viewed from the east like this one.

Nice pics. Are there any pedestrians in this city?

yeah..but u can't see them becuase they're taking the pictures. ;) j/k

I haven't been living in Houston for that long, and most of the times i've been downtown it's usually empty. But then i found out about the extensive tunnel system in downtown:

it's crazy full down there!! Kinda scary too. ghost town up top and all these crazy moles "down" town. :haha:

You must have been there on a Sunday morning. I think forumers have had this discussion many times. Downtown Houston can be jammed packed with people and traffic, depending on the time of day and day of week.

latennisguy May 28, 2008 1:16 PM

:previous: the ghost town occured on saturday morning, except for discovery green..jammed packed!. I have family visiting from out of town and they're completely surprised at how "quite" this big city is. The place everyone really seems to like is the village. You actually see people shopping and walking outdoors. I love that place too.

My Dad lives a couple of blocks from the Village (West University). Yep, it really is a cool place.

I usually think of Houston "overall" as chaotic and anything but quiet. But I would say Austin's downtown is a lot busier than Houston's, at least at this point. Houston does have a lot of quiet, very peaceful residential neighborhoods where it's hard to believe you're right in the middle of a big city.

I agree. People keep talking about Houston is still this laid back city and I don't see it. I see it as a city becoming more hectic and the pace becoming faster on every visit.
