Santa Monica High School

Quote:

Santa Monica, California. Founded in 1884, it is one of the oldest high schools in the state. It changed location several times in its early years before settling into its present campus at 601 Pico Boulevard
(Wondering about the other locations.)

Text suggests these photos may be from 1917 - or possibly earlier. Whatever the dates, the structures strike me as having been built with pride.

It made quite an impression on a 5 year old kid from the suburbs, a whole different world. Since I'm long gone from the area I'm afraid I'm more of a learner than a teacher but I do have a few scans from "The Los Angeles Book", a 1950 publication from photographer Max Yavno & author Lee Shippey.

Here's a couple views of City Hall we haven't seen yet:

Welcome to the thread Greg H and thanks for the images. This first one is my favorite. Judging from the angle of the shot I'm guessing maybe late '30's to late '40's and taken from somewhere west of Hill Place slightly north of Sunset. great shot.

It looks like there might be a victorian home attached (you get a glimpse on the right hand side).

The address in the 1936 directory at lapl places the Mission Hotel at 1747 Cahuenga Blvd. which puts it north of Hollywood Blvd.
I was hoping this little place still stands, but was unable to locate it.

A flume is man-made channel for water, in the form of an open inclined gravity chute whose walls are raised above the surrounding terrain, in contrast to a trench or ditch. Flumes lead water from a diversion dam or weir to their desired location.

Many flumes took the form of wooden troughs elevated on trestles, often following the natural contours of the land. Originating as a part of a mill race, they were later used in the transportation of logs in the logging industry. They were also extensively used in hydraulic mining and working placer deposits for gold, tin and other heavy minerals.

ER....The light pole seems to be still in place on North Cahuenga at that address [although the pole has a modern light attached]. The the old Victorian house is gone and today a drug store stands in it's place.

Thanks CityBoyDoug. Flumes I know, but what's a power flume?
I thought perhaps the 'rods' over the flume in the 1914 photo had something to do with producing electricity...hence the word power.

To your excellent point, at least one audience member may have heeded your preservation entreaty. On the northeast corner of Hauser and Pico, is the "Horgan Building."

The best thing that can be said of Google's picture of the building is that it was painted a detail-concealing light color which made the building's presence extremely underwhelming. From what I can tell, the facade was recently refreshed to highlight some of the building's original features, especially the building's masthead.

The below black and white image appears recent. (Thought I saw a photo of the building with a green field and will post if located.)

Nite-Lite Motel.....makes me drowsy. zzzzzzzz
__

This image just screamed San Gabriel Valley or Pomona Valley to me. At first I thought it might be Foothill Blvd. between Claremont and Upland. But then I had an "A-ha!" moment and deduced the name of the motel as "Oak Park." Quick google and voila! It's Huntington Drive in Monrovia, and that cool motel sign is still there! (Alas, the old oak is not.)

http://goo.gl/maps/4XVQP

The cars made me think 1950s, but the motel has a Bankamericard sign, so that makes c.1960 a better guess. Or maybe even a couple years later. Those road signs we can see the backs of here are definitely 1960s vintage, and they look pretty new here.

e_r: Did this seller have other slides with similar scenes? I'd be interested to see if they had other SGV images that were closer to home for me (Covina area).
