As youngster growing up in East Texas we were on the Missouri Pacific mainline (part of Southern Pacific) and would occasionally grab a train to Dallas or St. Louis. The Texas Eagle as it was known would occasionally show up behind a huge Mountain Class Steam Locomotive, even in the 1950s. Standing on the platform one could see the train coming about a mile away, at about half a mile away you could feel the ground begin to shake from the massive drivers thumping against the rail. I was told by an Uncle who engineered on the line that between Texarkana, Tx. and Little Rock, Ar. they would open it up and those Steam Engines would be pulling the train in excess of 110 mph. I'm sure the same would have been true between Ft. Worth and El Paso. I do remember that mail from St. Louis to Longview,Tx (roughly 700 miles) was basically overnight thanks to railway postal cars. |
Thanks, HossC., interesting!

The interior was like a big dining room your Grandma might have had. All the tables were big wooden round tables with tablecloths. If you all ordered similar meals, you were served, say, the potatoes and vegetables in glass serving bowls that you helped yourself from--like you would at Grandma's. There were wooden sideboards around the room, making it feel homey. If you wanted more of anything they brought you more. Lots of comfort food type meals on the menu. |

Was really fascinated by this book, so put what I felt was a good bid on it. Got blown out of the water, winner paid $177 for it. Oh well, would have been neat to have.

Signal sponsored The Whistler, a popular radio suspense show that ran in the late 1940s and 1950s. If you like that sort of thing it's worth a listen and can be found wherever OTR recordings and podcasts are available. |
