Great Links on the "Big Boy." I figured they would have already had it up to Cheyenne. Then I read the schedule from the link you provided along with news on the U.P. Website. Then I got to thinking about the fact they are probably greatly concerned about bearings and piston bores. I have a suspicion they will be giving the running gear a thorough going over in Colton. It will probably be there for a while.

As youngster growing up in East Texas we were on the Missouri Pacific mainline (part of Southern Pacific) and would occasionally grab a train to Dallas or St. Louis. The Texas Eagle as it was known would occasionally show up behind a huge Mountain Class Steam Locomotive, even in the 1950s. Standing on the platform one could see the train coming about a mile away, at about half a mile away you could feel the ground begin to shake from the massive drivers thumping against the rail. I was told by an Uncle who engineered on the line that between Texarkana, Tx. and Little Rock, Ar. they would open it up and those Steam Engines would be pulling the train in excess of 110 mph. I'm sure the same would have been true between Ft. Worth and El Paso. I do remember that mail from St. Louis to Longview,Tx (roughly 700 miles) was basically overnight thanks to railway postal cars.

I ate in the Tick Tock Restaurant in the summer of 1984 with visiting family, precisely because I knew it was a historic Hollywood place. I don't know about the changes from it being the Tick Tock Tea Room to the Tick Tock Restaurant, but the interior was not like the photo of the "Tea Room" photo above.

The interior was like a big dining room your Grandma might have had. All the tables were big wooden round tables with tablecloths. If you all ordered similar meals, you were served, say, the potatoes and vegetables in glass serving bowls that you helped yourself from--like you would at Grandma's. There were wooden sideboards around the room, making it feel homey. If you wanted more of anything they brought you more.

Lots of comfort food type meals on the menu.

U.S.C. Digital Library/California Historical Society.

The U.S.C. Digital Library page doesn't give a date, but the steelwork for General Hospital can be seen under construction in the far upper left, so someone here should be able to nail down the precise year.

Anyway, it's quite worthwhile to go the photo on the U.S.C. page and play with that enlargement slider. The view at 100% is pretty amazing.

Was really fascinated by this book, so put what I felt was a good bid on it. Got blown out of the water, winner paid $177 for it. Oh well, would have been neat to have.

Judging from the comment in the book about ''Guests will kindly leave this book in the room'', means that a lot of them were stolen.

As the maid might have said..."Yeah Mable, another one gone today...that means we've lost 75 books this year''.

In Magnin's shadow, was Switzer's at 3250 Wilshire. Walter Switzer evidently started out at 2118 West 7th Street, before packing the covered wagon and moving to where the mighty Wilshire meets the New Hampshire (Avenue). However, Switzer's evidently predated Magnin's by 7 or more years since it was listed in '32, but not in '29. (Magnin's apparently dates from '39) Walter S's Flintridge residence must have been a long commute - even if it was not all bumper to bumper traffic on Vermont.

Switzer had a nicely appointed interior, but not much merchandise - at least in these pictures! Hard to glimpse what was across the street.

Guessing this was early '30s.

I'm just old enough to remember Signal gas stations. Through much of the 1960s, we had a wooden toy chest with a Signal promotional sticker stuck on it--specifically for some sort of contest they were running. We never bought gas at a Signal station and I never saw one, but if memory serves the name was familiar enough to me that I'd at least heard of it, maybe through TV or radio commercials.

Signal sponsored The Whistler, a popular radio suspense show that ran in the late 1940s and 1950s. If you like that sort of thing it's worth a listen and can be found wherever OTR recordings and podcasts are available.
