I've been busy recently but will continue adding to the thread periodically. So, picking up where we left off:

Dhaka Tour - Kawran Bazar (following posts)

Heading north from Ramna one arrives at Kawran Bazar, a commercial area that has developed around the Sonargaon Pan Pacific, which for many years was the best hotel in Dhaka. A notable addition in more recent years is Bashundhara City, claimed to be the largest shopping mall in South Asia (at the time of its construction).

Dhaka Tour - Sher-e-Bangla Nagar (following posts)

To the northwest of Kawran Bazar, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar is the government district of Dhaka. The centerpiece is the National Assembly building, well known in architectural circles. Besides various other important government officies, other noteworthy structures in this area include the principal conference center, the national planetarium, and the tomb of an important politician. Development of this area began in the 1960s and continues today.

Dhaka Tour - Dhanmondi...and environs (following posts)

South of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar is Dhanmondi, the first planned suburb of Dhaka when it was built in the 1950s. Until the 1970s this was the most prestigeous residential area of the city and most of the foreign embassies were located here until about then. Dhanmondi remains a desirable address though it is not strictly residential anymore, and the parklands surrounding Dhanmondi Lake benefited from a beautification program in the late 1990s following a period of decline. Along Sat Masjid and Mirpur Roads between Dhanmondi and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar is some of the best shopping in Dhaka. Also in Dhanmondi and to east of it are a few scattered buildings from Mughal times.

Dhaka Tour - The Northwest (pics in the following post):

The northwest part of the city is large low to middle income area...nothing much noteworthy from an architectural standpoint. The headquarters of the Grameen Bank, recent Nobel Peace Prize winner, is located here, as is the National Cricket Stadium....which is what viewers of the 2011 World Cup will see. The Zoo and Botanical Gardens are also located in this area...during winter, lakes adjacent to these two come alive with thousands of migratory birds.

Dhaka Tour - Military Cantonment...and environs (pics in following posts):

In the center of the city a large swathe of land is given over the military cantonment. The area includes Dhaka's first airport, now used by the military. While I dislike having this compound within the city, on the plus side a large of chunk of land within the city has thus been preserved from major urban development, adding to the green space inside the city. The city's only golf course is also located here.

To the east of the military cantonment are the more affluent areas of the Dhaka, including Banani, Gulshan, Mohakhali, and Baridhara. Those areas will be up next on this tour.
