Hollywood on Parade
I found this old 1932 Newsreel - some hokie humor and celebs cameos.
I believe you can see the “Hollywoodland” sign (far off in the background) when the girl climbs the pole... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrh0xqQVWJc |
Flyingwedge's 'mystery' house.

Art Nouveau was short lived..from 1890 to 1910 (hmmm...maybe the Huntington dated the photographs by the style of the stained glass windows (?)) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/I76auX.jpg bee-u-tee-ful I thought the mantle might hold some clues. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/JqlaRw.jpg DETAIL Nope. ........unless someone recognizes the gentlman in the pictures. I thought the middle picture was a memento mori. After looking at it more closely I think the flower is a deep red poinsettia..thus probably not a death pic) odinthor, dos that look like a poinsettia to you? __ |
I'm not sure if we have seen the cover of the Los Angeles Yearbook from 1926.
Here it is rather large. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/u73W9H.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/ii3MLj.jpg adsausage[/SIZE] Here's a sample page. Union Automobile Insurance Co. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/cfVaTX.jpg adsausage This building still stands, right? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/Cc2mpq.jpg google_earth looking southwest from 6th and Beaudry. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/cYfw6w.jpg for side-by-side comparison https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/1XSCkq.jpg DETAIL If it is the same (and I'm 99% sure it is)...they need to rip the faux-glass facade off..and reveal the original building underneath. I wonder anything remains of the once grand vaulted lobby. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/tFCUvn.jpg DETAIL Such a shame to lose so much of the beautiful architectural details. _ |
:previous: re:The location of the Union Automobile Insurance Co.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/vX9QHQ.jpg So where i Loomis? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/pVgACN.jpg under the freeway? __ |
:previous: Wow, e_r, I never would have guessed an old building is behind all that glass!
Loomis was a short little street between 6th and Orange/Wilshire. Today, Beaudry south of 6th jogs to the east then continues down to Wilshire. It looks like if Beaudry didn't curve west below 6th, it would follow the old line of Loomis: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pskkc6wbil.jpg 1906 Sanborn @ ProQuest via LAPL |

The glass building has appeared a couple of times on NLA. The first post I've found is when e_r showed us several old and new pictures in post #25959 nearly four years ago. It also came up again just over two years ago - see post #36202 and post #36210 for starters. From the last of those posts, here's a picture I posted when it was the Shell Building (full post at link above). Quote:

Strawberry shortcake..............

Carpenter's Sunset and Vine.....1932. NE corner. Strawberry shortcake At the time of the posted photo the address of Carpenter's was 6285 Sunset which was on the northeast corner of Sunset and Vine. That corner became NBC's Radio City in 1938 and Carpenter's moved to the southeast corner at 1480 Vine. NBC's Radio city was demolished in 1964 and replaced by the building now occupied by Chase bank. The Carpenter's was replaced by the Sunset Vine Tower at about the same time. |

Another Perry Mason mystery building...
"Obviously" it's Hollywood Boulevard...can anyone identify the building? https://i.postimg.cc/DfcJBP6g/pmholl...dgdown-bmp.jpg |
:previous::previous:
GW, it could also be Vine Street, the stars go down Vine Street to Sunset from Hollywood Blvd. and they go north to at least the Capitol Records building. |

...just for kicks (my life is boring) I thought I'd try to find a photograph of teeny tiny Ingraham Place. alas..nothing so far. but still lookin' |
From an article titled Naughty Los Angeles in the 1890s.
We have discussed (and seen) Los Angeles' first City Hall many times on NLA...but this is the first time I've heard there were prostitutes working inside of it. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/iRk96y.jpg VERSO Huntington Blog Was anyone, here on NLA, aware of this? _ SIDENOTE: I might have mentioned flue #5 before, but I don't recall the other four! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/GemJIJ.jpg What's going on in the second floor (besides prostitution) that required so many flues. Did the architect forget to include chimneys? p.s. perhaps Ms. Morton ran a massive opium den as well... thus the flues. ;) __ |

Does anyone recognize this collapsing house?
It has practically no information except, Los Angeles - Vintage photo." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/9XArBY.jpg Ebay It's an interesting photo but I'm not convinced this is Los Angeles. It come with this certificate of authenticity https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/lo2thC.jpg Ebay And two small clues written on the back upper right corner https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...923/NyNumG.jpg lower right corner https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...924/XtkifX.jpg Could 1927 be the build date of the house? LINK |
This one has all kinds of clues.....but who is Frederick?
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/OUldxt.jpg Ebay written on the reverse: "FREDDIR'S HOME. I CALL IT THE HOUSE MY DAD BUILT." LINK for search purposes: 539 South Beverly Glen Blvd. Los Angeles, West - California |
:previous:
Frederick seems to have been Fred F. Harris...his father was Fred E. Harris...real estate men https://i.postimg.cc/tgHTWnjV/539bevglenlat-bmp.jpg LAT July 19, 1936 Hmmm...it seems to have come out with its elements rearranged (unless this is another house he built on Bevery Glen) https://i.postimg.cc/pXt6N2RJ/539beverlyglen-bmp.jpg |

Firstly, here's Loomis Street on part of a circa 1929 cityscape. It starts just above the REX ARMS sign on the left and finishes above the HOTEL KNICKERBOCKER sign on the right. The Union Automobile Insurance Co building is visible on the corner. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original USC Digital Library Moving left, Ingraham Place was behind the right end of the Wellington. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original As above |
Yet another Perry Mason house...
https://i.postimg.cc/28GdB7Wg/pm61411-bmp.jpg With the address in plain sight, it wasn't too hard to find this one--it's at the end of the 6100 block of Oakwood Avenue, which, conveniently for filming, dead-ended at the Wilshire Country Club golf course.... 6141 Oakwood was built in 1937 by Dr. & Mrs. Verne C. Hunt. The plan was for 23 rooms.... Architect: Gerard R. Colcord https://i.postimg.cc/5ySzLLPP/pm6141gsv.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/dt9Xtf9C/pm61412-bmp.jpg Paul waits in his '61 Tbird while Perry and Della approach in the Continental. Strangely, Perry's top is up. He almost always drove his convertibles with the top down, all over the city, day and night, and even when supposedly driving out of town at high speeds, and on dirt roads in the country. (Maybe in this shot it was Della's hair. Hmm.. I wonder if she ever got married.) https://i.postimg.cc/nckFb0jR/pm6141111-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/pTXr44kB/pm61413-bmp.jpg Across from 6141...for part of a season, Perry got an upgrade from Fords to this '61 Continental... |
