Much to my surprise....I just realized there are two people in the sweet potatoes photo.

"Antique Negative Girl In California Oil Field"

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/2...922/6EiLK4.jpg

I'm looking for some help in reversing this negative.(I used to know how before I changed computers)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/4lmxo3.jpg
EBAY

I'm guessing this was taken in one of the oil fields in the South Bay area.
(I realize there's going to be a big black blob floating in the air next to the little girl)

Here's a closer look at the girl (and blob)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/zfdgFJ.jpg

She appears to be charmingly dressed in frills and bows. It makes me wonder if she was the young daughter of the owner of the oilfield.
They even brought her a little chair to sit on.

I'm going to disagree on the guy's location. I believe he is at the rear-facing steps at the far left of the front house, shown on the demo plan. In the photo of the guy you can see the side of the front porch of the house next door, which is the same house today, and a couple of other houses across the street.

I hadn't considered that possibility, ProphetM, but I think you're probably correct. There doesn't appear to be a door on the back corner today.

I wonder if the amateur photographer took this because of the remnants of snow* in the shadow of the mountain (I think that's snow) or because of the remarkable tunnel.

*I've gone back and forth on whether or not that is snow. I decided it was snow when I noticed the dusting on the bricks/stone of the tunnel entrance.
And by living in the midwest I know that snow will last two or three days longer if it's in continual shadow (or even longer if it's real cold!)

Does anyone know which tunnel this is?

...and I'm curious, how many think this is snow?

_________________________________________________________________

I'm not exactly sure where the location of the above photo is specifically, so I'm not sure that is snow pictured...we also have to be wary of dates supplied by 3rd parties.

I tried to keep a source listing for snow dates in Los Angeles and environs, but I keep finding anomalies here and there.

Since official records were first kept in 1877, the downtown Los Angeles weather station observed measurable snowfall three times:

Downtown Los Angeles weather station
RECORDED SNOWFALL:
1882
1932
1949

News reports recorded snowfall elsewhere in the Los Angeles Basin:
1913
1921
1922
1926
1944
1957
1962

And from a source:
Snowfall at higher elevations and in inland valleys is more common; a
1989
system dropped several inches on the San Fernando Valley but missed the coastal plain, and a
2007
storm dusted the canyons above Malibu with powder and dropped hail-like graupel on L.A.'s Westside.

A search for photos on NLA concerning snow have some dated
1923 (Hollywood & Vine)
1948 (from Universal Studios to across the valley)
1953 (San Bernardino)

HossC posted HERE some snow photos dated:
1912
1930
and included links to a post from G-W to a photo of snow in Silverlake dated
1950

And from the L.A. Almanac which began in 1921 I posted this once:

Quote:

http://www.laalmanac.com/weather/we17.htm

Under "Snow in Los Angeles County" it has this item:
Since records were first kept in 1921, snow has fallen on downtown Los Angeles only ten times.

The information is from the National Weather Service and lists these dates:

Year Month & Amount of Snowfall
1922 January (trace), March (trace)
1935 December (trace)
1947 December (trace)
1949 January (slightly more than 0.3 inches)
1950 April (0.2 inches)
1951 February (trace), March (trace)
1952 January (trace), March (trace), December (trace)
1954 January (0.3 inches), February (trace)
1957 January (trace)
1962 January (trace)
A revisit to that link right now has updates which include:

Latest Incidents of Snowfall Los Angeles International Airport, Downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach
1991
Los Angeles Intl. Airport trace (less than 0.5 inches) March 27, 1991
1996
Long Beach Airport trace (less than 0.5 inches) February 25, 1996
___

If you put all these dates together from sources and captions of snowfall in the L.A. area, we get:

Here's the original photo for comparison:

Well, a couple of things stand out for what's not in the photo. I don't see any blood on the seats so chances are the bullets weren't stopped by a body. The driver's side window appears to be rolled down, so if the shots were fired from outside the passenger side, did they simply pass through? Or are they exit holes fired at the driver through the open window? Any ballistics experts in the crowd?

Hello Gents. Was wondering if I can get a little help. Trying to find information on 2118 Trinity Street. Apparently my grandmother traveled to Los Angeles to give birth to my mom in 1944 and stay at a place on Trinity Street. When we checked the 1940 census, the building was occupied almost entirely by women, and was labeled a "Training Home". The building disappeared sometime between 1964 and 1972. Any information would be appreciated.

Edit: oh yes, and the occupants were listed as "inmates"?

The Minnie Barton Home for Girls was built at 2118 Trinity Street in 1918 under the auspices of the Big Sister League and the Women's City Club.
Minnie Barton was "the well known probation officer" from the city jail. In the late teens and early 20s, the Training Home appeared to be a halfway home for young women being released from jail. Its mission was later expanded.

From Minnie Barton's Find a Grave page:

"Minnie Hafley McCoach Barton was the second female police officer in Los Angeles, the first one being Alice Stebbins Wells, who was the first female cop in the entire nation. Minnie was noted for befriending homeless girls and working with young women on parole or probation, sometimes taking them into her home and giving them vocational training. In 1917, she founded the "Minnie Barton Home." In the early years, she and her co-workers were primarily interested in women just released from jail. Often younger women were committed to the Home in lieu of jail sentences. This facility grew to include care for pregnant women, often left destitute as a result of the father's jail confinement or abandonment. The Home has since expanded and exists today as Children's Institute, Inc. Minnie was born in Linn County, Kansas, and followed her parents to San Marcial, New Mexico, where she married John Alexander Barton, who took her to LA, where they had three children.

See http://www.laalmanac.com/crime/cr73b.htm and http://www.childrensinstitute.org/about/history/ "

Much more info on Minnie Barton and the Training Home may be found at this KCET page:

"Parole Officer No. 2: Minnie Barton and the Crusade for Lost Women"

and on google.

I'm sure Ms Barton has come up before here.

Thank you guys. This really clears things up. My sister has been tracking down my mother's birth parents. All we know is that her mom traveled from Northern California to Los Angeles to give birth, and kept it a secret from her family.

Here's a teeny-tiny Los Angeles connection to one of the more fascinating crimes of the 1920s, one I hadn't come across before in reading about the Leopold & Loeb case. It seems that Nathan Leopold's father, NL Sr, a widower since 1921, married Daisy K. Hahn of LA in Chicago on October 3, 1927. He died there less than two year later, just after returning from spending the winter in California. The couple appears to have lived at 4409 Francis Ave in a duplex that has since been replaced with an apartment building. Mrs. Leopold seems to have been fond of the name Francis--on her return to LA after her husband's death, she leased an apartment at the new Sir Francis Drake at 841 S Serrano...one of the big residential buildings that rose in Pellissier Square after the single-family-house restriction was lifted in 1928. We've touched on these buildings at NLA before, but here's a little more on the subject:

I found some off-topic noir earlier. You may remember that a couple of months ago e_r posted a picture of Mickey Ward's LA Camera Exchange by renowned photographer Weegee, aka Arthur Fellig (see post #46996). Well, some of Weegee's early twentieth century crime scenes photos of New York have now been colorized. You can see the results at mediadrumworld.com. The one below is from June 17th, 1915.

Maybe some of his old LA photos will get the same treatment one day.
