I like that they've maintained the sculptured shrubbery....they really add to the somewhat occidental feel of the house.



BUT (and it's a big but)...I see that they replaced one of my favorite parts....the curved semi-circular area to the left of the garage with run-of-mill cement blocks.

I don't know what happened to poor Mme. de Kersauson de Pennendreff's ducks, but her first appearance in an LACD is in
1895. Both of her daughters were married in Los Angeles. By 1920 Mme. de K de P was at 1183 Mirasol. Also, here's her

At the Front in a Flivver by William Yorke Stevenson [an American volunteer ambulance driver] (Houghton Mifflin Co., 1917) @ Hathitrust

The same book that has the above photo says Robert was selling cars in California when WWI broke out, and the book
includes a citation (in French) in which he is mentioned. There is a longer bio of Robert here (in English) that includes
a photo of the old family chateau in Brittany. He volunteered to fight for the Boers against the British before joining the
French Army in WWI. He survived his military service and lived to be 92.

This 1940 aerial (below, left) shows that there was another building behind 740 Hartford Avenue. The building next door (above 740 on the aerial) is numbered 734 & 736, so maybe the second house moved by Mr Wiley in 1913 (originally 712 Hartford, it became 738 Hartford) was placed behind 740. That might explain the number of residents that oldstuff found. Perhaps someone with access to the Sanborn maps can check it out.

I think that the sweet potato photo was taken between the two buildings, looking toward the lower right corner of the aerial view, and past the house below 740 on the aerial. You'll remember that the house below was missing from the 2009 GSV image I posted. I think it was 742 & 744 Hartford Avenue, which got its demo permit in 1980.

While trying to find info on the building behind 740, I found that it was still there in 1972, but gone by 1980 (according to Historic Aerials). The only building permit in that date range was an alteration/repair permit from October 30, 1979, but it held the answer. There was obviously a fire at 740 which necessitated a repair to a portion of the front building and the demolition of the middle and rear portions. They even included a handy plan. Notice that the fire damage to the front portion was to the roof and 2nd story at the back right. I'm guess that the fire may have damaged the house next door, which was further back from the road. Maybe its demo a year later was connected. Now I look at these plans again, I think that the sweet pototo photo was taken on the steps at the lower-right corner of the rear portion.

I don't know why your image didn't show (at least not for me), rentatrip, so without any context to your comment, I initially thought you were referring to the novelty jail photo. Then I found an episode of Dragnet on YouTube and discovered that you meant the double bullet hole photo. It only appears briefly in a montage of images, so well spotted. I wonder if the amateur photographer took this because of the remnants of snow* in the shadow of the mountain (I think that's snow) or because of the remarkable tunnel.

*I've gone back and forth on whether or not that is snow. I decided it was snow when I noticed the dusting on the bricks/stone of the tunnel entrance.
And by living in the midwest I know that snow will last two or three days longer if it's in continual shadow (or even longer if it's real cold!)

Does anyone know which tunnel this is?

...and I'm curious, how many think this is snow?

Hmm...it looks a lot like the Malibu Canyon tunnel where the notorious Pink Lady appeared in 1966.

But the Pink Lady tunnel was built in 1952. If the date of the color slide is correct, it can't be the same tunnel.

He saw his mom come in the door in the morning, dressed like a ninja. Hair back, black jeans, black hoodie. "Where have you been? What have you been doing?" he asked.
