Atlanta's solution to sprawl = Walking Trails
 

So I've found that recently many projects have sprouted up in Atlanta. But the one with the most impact will improve walkability and connectivity within the city. The Atlanta Beltline has also given other communities ideas of connecting neighborhoods.

What do you think about using trails for connectivity? Do you have any ideas for other trails?

Wow, those Morrow trails are impressive! I'd like to see the one in College Park, too.

I think this is a wonderful idea.

I would like to see trails incorporated into the cleaning up of all of our waterways, like Nancy Creek, Peachtree Creek and the streams that feed into it, etc. Think of the possibilities with that woven through the metro.

Not just Atlanta, but the Atlanta area. The Smyrna/Cumberland area has trails on almost every major road and the Silver Comet. We're looking to extend it to Atlanta. Please sign the petition: http://connectthecomet.org

Does anyone have or know locations to GIS data they wouldn't mind sharing with me? I'm specifically looking for existing and/or proposed multi-use and bike infrastructure for DeKalb County. Specifically, I'm currently looking for Peachtree Creek Greenway and South Peachtree Creek Extension. I may just snag peachtree creek water data if I cannot find the actual trail. I'm looking to compile more of our multi-use and bike infrastructure in metro Atlanta. Currently starting with Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties, although I'm open and willing to include other counties. My goal would be to review existing and proposed infrastructure and try to help publicly champion some projects that may be flying under the radar, like the Centennial Park Connector which could have unobstructed right-of-way between COP with the Bankhead Station/Westside BeltLine/Westside Reservoir Park.

Atlanta's trail network is growing substantially and it would be fun to encourage inter-connectivity similar to a transit map that would supplement MARTA HRT maps, proposed streetcar maps, and general bus maps. Maps would include existing, currently proposed, holistic, and potentially new corridors not yet included in the public data sets.

Here's Carrollton's Greenbelt

It completely encircles the city and goes around Lake Carroll, the rec area/ball fields, the campus for the school system and around the perimeter of UWG. They have several bike rental sites along it as well. They've incorporated Frisbee Golf at Hobbs Farm and several new parks were built as part of the plan. VERY NICE!

Thanks for the add! I'm not as familiar with the Carrolton and Bremen area, although one of my buddies lives out there, so I appreciate the contribution. I did not know this existed.

University of Central Florida has a lot of walking trails and boardwalks on and nearby campus. Major interconnections between Atlanta neighborhoods and neighboring cities would promote a unique culture for Atlanta in comparison to Northeastern and Midwestern cities.

Bike lanes in Buckhead to route along Pharr Road to Maple Drive. Here's hoping one day Peachtree is converted, too. This contribution on Maple drive is nice, although bike lanes already exist on Pharr road. Wish there was a buffer on Pharr.

Cobb County's draft Greenways and Trails Plan
 

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I decided this thread was a logical place.

The article summarizes the top eight priority projects in the plan. I'm impressed with the work the Cobb DOT and the consultants did on the project, and also the fact that much of the project is already underway, with the help of the Cobb DOT, the ARC, the various CIDs (Cumberland, Town Center), and the six cities in Cobb. There are links in the article to all the documents and maps, so if you're really into trail and greenway planning, there's enough on the project site to geek out for days.

Newnan is going to break ground on the first phase of its trail network soon (called "LINC").

As much as I prefer to see Intown development, trails could and should be built everywhere. Reminds me of getting around in New Jersey, actually. Lots of trails connecting towns around Princeton.
