As a reminder, there was also an Europa Cafe at 312 W. 7th St.

Apropos of current events, are there any historical photos/articles on the "Spanish" flu pandemic in L.A. after WW1? The articles/pictures must exist. Ethereal & others will dig them out I'm confident.

CaliNative, this article is from the Los Angeles Herald dated September 27, 1918.

As you'll see it's full of misinformation. . .much like the misinformation we're experiencing today. ("We have the virus under control." our current Pres.)

THIS is the correct location. (sorry that I misled you in my previous Knox post)

e_r trust you'll be ok with a correction to your correction. :)

The church was across the street on the SE corner of Figueroa and 43rd with an address at 4300-02 South Figueroa Street.

Here is it in 1938.

The Arthur Miller mentioned on the back of the picture card was the contractor on the job. The Reverend Henderson Shoemaker was the applicant on the permit.

I can't find a demolition date for the church but the early 1980's looks likely. The building that's there now was built in 1998

Of course, Noir Noir. Thanks for clearing it up.

That's very interesting about the permit. Good job!

Mystery Club

The following two photographs show, what appears to be, a fraternal-like organization called the Static Club.

Note the 'pin-ups' between the windows and above the mirror on the left. . .and the musical instruments. . .and the exotic pipe. . .and the two phones on the bureau.

The next photograph shows the exterior of the house with members of the Static Club posing on the front porch.

The two photographs were taken in Los Angeles in 1905. [below]

Has anyone heard of the 'Static Club'. . .or where, in Los Angeles, it was located?..........I'm stumped.

I found this mention of The Static Club.

There is also a mention of some of the camera crew for Buster Keaton being Static Club members.

There's "A Short History of the Static Club" at gracekingsley.wordpress.com. Here's the opening paragraph:

Before there was an American Society of Cinematograhers, there was the Static Club. Founded on February 13, 1913, their object was “for the benefit and furtherance of the camera-men of the motion picture industry” according to the minutes from the first meeting. The club’s name came from a common problem cameramen were having with static electricity fogging their film, but Kodak soon developed an anti-static backing that solved it. However, the cameramen found plenty of other things to talk about, and the club lasted for five years.

The article mentions meetings at the Wilson Building at First and Spring Streets, and later a "cozy bungalow retreat" at 1839 Santa Cruz Avenue. The bungalow is still there. Meanwhile, a book called The New Historical Dictionary of the American Film Industry says that the club was initially head-quartered at 406 Court Street.

Wow! ....Thanks BarSnake and HossC.

I would have never guessed the Static Club had anything to do when the origins of the American Society of Cinematographers!

I imagine the two photographs are extremely rare. The ASC should bid on them.

Some items on the Static Club from the LA Times (the Herald has more, mostly about their annual Ball).

Not sure if this first one is the early days of the same Static Club. But whatever it was, in 1904 they went to Coronado for some fun.

Thanks UphillDonkey.

I located the original source of the photograph, Travels With Two. ...

A commenter, one Agnes Gellen Szecsenyi, wrote this. . .

"I have been is this home many times. Margoux was my customer when I was altering her waste collection of vintage 1940- 50 costume collection for years, the home was just like Margaux herself. unbelievable! . I was allowed to take pictures inside and I will post them here, I know I tucked them away. from church seats what she purchased in South America taken apart and shipped here and built in the home and outside of course it was more than 20 years ago. everything was eccentric like Margo herself lived with a monkey and many dogs in that house. if she is still alive she is in her 70 -s now. she had a very interesting rich life."...Jan. 12, 2018

A monkey! just like Norma Desmond. ;)

Dr. Dunsmore, that's good advice, thank you sir. I'm all wrapped up like baby-bunting [...Daddy's gone a hunting]. I even wear two pairs of socks in bed at night. I pray this will ward off virus C-19. Good that many of us noirishers live in the Sunshine state where we can convalesce on our front porch .

Years ago, two of my friends caught SARS in China.....holy moly they were sick for a month. That HCoV-NL63 can do a real job on you.

While researching . . . something else . . . I ran across this nice image of the Arcade Bldg., which I hope has not been posted here before:

Very fun list or tenants, odinthor! Good to see Zinke's there. And R.S. Croff, Marvel Whipper! One has to wonder.
