How frequently do you visit neighboring cities?
How often do you visit cities near your own, and what compels you to visit these places? Also, what cities are close to you that are just not on your radar?
I'm thinking about cities that you visit regularly to get a different experience from your own city, but not places you visit because you have family there, or your company sends you on regular business trips there. For me, in Vancouver, it's sort of tough since I'm jammed in the top, left-hand corner of the habitable map (sorry, Anchorage, you're just too far). Inevitably, the cities I visit are going to be south and east of me. And while there aren't many to choose from, most of them are pretty good and pretty different to warrant repeat visits. Basically, my visits include: Seattle. About once or twice a year. A bit of a sister city to Vancouver - at least in my impressions. I go regularly enough that I have a few hangouts. Also, somewhat necessary to travel through to get to areas in southern and eastern Washington and Oregon, and to use the airport to fly to other places in the US more cheaply than from Canada. Victoria. About once every year and a half. Victoria is a bit of a pain to get to, since the ferry ride makes it roughly a 4.5 hour journey to go 60 miles as the crow flies. However, Victoria is sort of a West Coast, Canadian version of Savannah (with some residential areas that look vaguely Australian) and probably one of the most underrated cities on the continent. Whenever my wife has a business trip, I try to tag along because we get to take our car on the ferry for free and the hotel is already paid for. Portland. About once every 2 years. Portland is a bit of a Vancouver antidote. New York. Once every 2 years. Probably the only city I cross the continent for to visit on a regular basis, for obvious reasons. I used to go because friends of mine lived there, but I still go despite all of them having moved away. LA About once every 3-5 years. It's very urban-nerdy of me, but there is a certain appeal in visiting a "megacity" and just knowing that a city has more than 10 million people makes it feel bigger and more animated. I know it sounds pedantic, but that's the main reason I feel the urge to visit LA every few years. It just happens to be the closest megacity to where I live, and it also gets better every time I go. And places that are close but not on my radar? This one is tough because, again, there are so few cities near Vancouver. It's probably one of the biggest drawbacks of living here. San Francisco or Calgary would be the next closest real cities, but they seem pretty far away. I've been to them both once, and that was years ago. |
Living in Thunder Bay? Um . . . Does Winnipeg count as neighbouring?
When in Ottawa for school I'd usually manage the GTHA once a year (excluding transferring flights). Only visited Montreal once, but that's because I didn't realise how cheap and easy it was to visit. Going to visit more now. |
Living in chicago, the only nearby city I visit frequently is milwaukee, and that's because my wife is originally from there and still has family there, we head up I-94 about 12 times a year or so.
|
Living in SF, I rarely visit nearby cities unless it's to visit a friend or family or go to Home Depot or something. I'm about to move to Oakland though, and have a feeling I'll be visiting SF pretty frequently.
edit: if you're talking about visiting cities in different metro areas...then it happens even more rarely. In the past few years the only cities I've visited outside of the Bay Area have been Sacramento, Asheville, and random small cities/towns in the central valley of CA. Though I just noticed you want to hear about cities that are visited for the "experience", but not to see family/friends/for work, and in that case...Oakland and Berkeley I guess. And if it can't be in the same metro area, then I've been nowhere. If I had more money i'd travel a lot more. |
Not very often. I'm in Paris a couple times a year if that counts. From NYC, I would visit friends in DC.
|
i'm in either chicago, kansas city, or louisville/lexington, ky every other month or so. i've already been to kansas city twice in less than a month. random trips to nashville or memphis.
im in miami and/or new orleans once every year or two during the winter. the rest of my domestic traveling is to a new city or two every year, but i've basically run out of "new" us cities. im turning abroad this summer. i'm returning to philadelphia this fall. |
Depends on what you mean by neighboring cities. I presume you obviously don't mean intra-metropolitan areas, towns and cities.
I've been to New Orleans, Beaumont, Montgomery, San Antonio, Austin, Lake Charles and Lafayette in the last 14 months. I thought about going to Dallas-Fort Worth to "escape" the Tropical Storm (i.e. just take a mini-vacation) but I can't think of a single good reason to go, at least as far as sights of interests that aren't sports related. (In reality I know some but they don't interest me). And as it turned out that's exactly where it headed after making landfall, so it was a good decision not to do so. |

There are suburbs of Vancouver that I've never been to in my life. My urge to explore my surroundings is stronger than the average person, but it's not that strong. |
Given that the GHA is bigger than some states, there are plenty of towns I haven't been in around here and that includes Galveston County, where I've resided for over 20 years.
|
Sacramento--several times a year.
Santa Cruz--several times a year. Monterey & Carmel--several times a year. South Lake Tahoe--several times a year. Reno--several times a year. Los Angeles--at least a couple times a year. Las Vegas--once every couple years. Portland--at least once a year. Seattle--once every couple years. San Diego--once every couple years. |
It's all basically the same metro but I get to San Francisco probably once a week.
Wine Country (Sonoma/Napa area) probably once a month. San Jose probably once a month, maybe once every other month. Sacramento probably 3 times a year. Portland has been pretty consistently once a year. I don't get out much to be completely honest. I've gone for weeks on end where the only reason I've left my own little neighborhood is to go to work. |
My parents and brother live in Phoenix, so I usually go down there from Flagstaff about once a month, but I hardly ever visit Sedona or Prescott even though theyre closer.
I'm an hour and a half from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and usually try to go to or three times a year, usually in Fall and Winter when the weather is cooler, there aren't as many tourists and the park waives entrance fees on select weekends. I try to go to LA/Orange County about once a year to see friends from college. I'm four hours from both Las Vegas and Albuquerque and have only ever been to both to visit once. I really need to change that. |
The last time I visited a neighbouring city was about a year ago when I took the Go bus to Hamilton and walked around the downtown area for an afternoon.
I'm thinking of taking the Megabus to Buffalo and doing the same thing this summer. |
San Francisco - several times a year
Oakland - once, sometimes twice per year. San Jose - once every few years Los Angeles - Haven't been in 16 years. I hate LA. Reno - once every few years Tahoe - every summer |
Vegas is the only city close to SLC I visit often.
|
Once a week I take the GO Express Bus down the QEW to Hamilton to visit my 102 year old father in the Home.
|
Not with any frequency. There are a couple towns (Stettler and Castor) in central east Alberta that I make a pilgrimage to every year but that's it.
|
Pensacola, FL and Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL - 2 or 3 times a year. (easy and quick beach weekends)
Atlanta, GA - last visit was in 2012. (Nice aquarium) Baton Rouge, LA - last visit (for non-work related reasons) was in 2010. (The state capitol has a nice tour with some interesting history, otherwise...meh.) Memphis, TN - last visit was in 2008. (Enjoyed Beale St. and good BBQ) Houston, TX - last visit was in 2007. (Literally for a Maroon 5 concert) We go camping in various places around Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi, but that's not really visiting a city since we're in the woods. Otherwise, our trips involve flying to far off places. (i.e. Yellowstone (and maybe Cancun or Panama) this year; San Juan, PR and Yosemite last year.) |
When I lived in Toronto, I took advantage of that city's [relative] centrality to other bigger cities, and would visit Montreal, Buffalo and NYC with some regularity, and popped over to Boston, Detroit, Chicago and Ottawa at least twice and made it to Philly and Cleveland because I felt that I should go at least once.
If I lived in Europe, I would take advantage of their low cost airlines and high speed rail system to access all their great cities on a regular basis Maybe you begin to appreciate these things more when you live in a relatively isolated corner of the world. |
I am kind of beached here in Austin nowadays. I visit New Orleans and Fort Worth every year or so to see family and friends I also make it to NYC every year or so, and I am a out in LA/Palm Springs to visit family about every two years. I never visit nearby San Antonio. I don't like the place at all. I keep making plans to go over to Houston, but then I never go in spite of the fact that I find Houston to be gritty and interesting. It has been three years since I was last there. I am almost 70 years old now. When I was younger (and lived on either the east or west coast), I was constantly flying off to visit places. I have been to most of the major cities in North America, Mexico, South America, and Western Europe at some point in time. I was an especially frequent traveler to cities in Europe, but I have not been there in over a decade. I am still fascinated by cities, but I am amazed to discover that I can't motivate myself to travel much any more.

Minneapolis and St. Paul- 4 times a year, born and raised there.
Millwaukee- once a year, it's close soooo..... Outside of the USA Both of my parents are German and I go to Germany and Austria often (Düsseldorf, Neuss, München, and Innsbruck) |
I go to Philly about once a week. I go to NYC about once a month. I visit DC, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Chicago about once a year. I like to take a lot of short vacations and there is always an excuse to visit.
|
San Diego: once a year or so
San Francisco: once a year or so Phoenix: at least once usually twice a year Las Vegas: at least once a year Central Valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, ect): twice or more a year (just flew out of BFL the other day cause it was super cheap, actually) |
I go to Hamilton once every 3-4 months or so to visit friends and hang out. That's the closest neighbouring (real) city but could still be considered the same metro area.
Don't visit many of the other cities in southern Ontario as I have no reason to. I've been to London, Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Peterborough (a lot, for work ugh) etc but there's nothing super existing to bring me back unless I have a reason to. I go to Ottawa very occasionally - it would be a lot more except that my friends who live there will come to Toronto once every few months like clockwork! Kind of a drag as I want to check out some of the new bars/restaurants there… I'm in Buffalo/Niagara maybe twice a year. However sadly to say it's usually for shopping and I have yet to actually explore downtown Buffalo. I can't say no to Ben Sherman shirts marked down as low as $20 at the Niagara outlets though... I went to Chicago 3 times last year and going again next month for a little. I used to visit Montreal a fair bit but haven't been in a few years. Really should go again. Haven't been in 1.5 years but generally visit NYC about once a year. |
Nowhere this past year..Those Montreal day trips and American seaboard weekend jaunts just haven't been in the cards this past while.
|
Portland - Once or Twice a Year
Vancouver - Usually Annually Victoria - Every Other Year I'm from Boston and have family in the Bay Area so I'm in both of those places usually around twice a year. I also try to get to New York every other year or so. |
Shanghai is a big ol' bubble, and if you spend long enough here, you end up thinking it's better than every other city in China, so you expect people to come to you, rather than you go to them. Terrible way of thinking, but it happens.
Having said that, I love Beijing, and get up there maybe once a year to see friends. I'm in HK three to four times a year. Half the time for business, half the time for pleasure. I visit Taipei once a year. Kaohsiung and Tainan I go to three times a year to see family and friends. Shanghai International Airport is a pain in the ass, but it has great connections to pretty much everywhere in Asia, so it's never hard to get a flight to HK or Taiwan on a whim. |
Cleveland is 2.5 hours away. I visit on occasion. Columbus is less than 3 hours as well. It's about 6 hours to visit Philly & NYC and 4 hours to DC. I have been known to drive to those cities for concerts or general tomfoolery.
I've also been known to hang out in Cincinnati and Detroit (Both about 4.5 hours) . |
los angeles:
- palm springs: a few times a year, mostly to relax in the sun and admire MCM architecture. - san francisco: a couple of times a year to see friends, try new restaurants, hang out. - portland: once every two or so years. check out coffee shops, bike infrastructure, breweries, new infill/redevelopment. - nyc: about once a year to see friends (of which, being from la, there are alot of) and get my legit, urban big city fix. - san diego: maybe twice a year, less so now that my brother has finished his studies there. probably the best craft beer scene anywhere. oslo: - førde, norway: my girlfriend's hometown - we go a few times a year to see her friends and folks, go skiing/snowboarding, swimming and exploring fjords, hiking, etc. it is a so-so small town of 12.000 with world-class natural landscapes and attractions. - bergen, norway: at least once a year, especially shopping around the holidays, as it is the main big city in the fjord region close to førde. very beautiful and picturesque, but kind of dull, imo. - copenhagen: a few times a year to hang out, eat out, bike around, drink in public, etc. i have a couple of friends there, so there are always invitations to go and hang. - berlin: my old european home. i go at least once a year to visit my old stomping grounds and see what has changed and what hasn't. - london: haven't been this year, but will go later on, if only for the sheer fact that it is the european primate city and literally has something for everybody. norwegians visit fairly often, mostly to go shopping and to take advantage of big city attractions. |
^ Umm... Tu aimes les blondes ? On dirait bien.
:haha: You've got that north fetish or something? I've got a huge info for you: there is life south of London and Berlin too. Si si, I swear. |
-St Louis, several times a year
-El Paso/Juarez MX, every other year, or two -Chihuahua MX, same as above -Oklahoma City & Albuquerque , every 5 years |
Travel up to nyc on average about once a month. About to see my terrible Phillies play the Yankees tomorrow up there.

And I know that life in the south is good - I just got back from Malta 3 days ago, and have been to Portugal, Spain, France, and Turkey as well. |
^ Mah, come on, don't be that way. I'm just a clown here. That was just supposed to make you smile from a little self-mockery, if that was possible... It doesn't hurt from time to time.
Anyway, my deal is 1. taking nothing too seriously, and 2. trying to bring some updates from my country to this forum when I find some interesting and available/shareable, since there's still only a tiny couple of us on here. I don't really know why. It's been a little annoying to me. I know you've been moving around enough. I kind of remember some Barcelona and Paris photo threads of yours. Maybe even Seville, I forget. Yes, You've been travelling, that's good. |
I live in Raleigh, NC.
Charlotte: Every week for work. Greensboro/Winston-Salem: Several times a year. Wilmington, NC: Once or twice a year. Asheville: Twice a year for wife's family Atlanta: Once or twice a year, for business and pleasure. Columbia, SC: Only passing through. Other cities like DC, NYC only for special occasions. I've never been to Norfolk area, or Charleston SC. The only two cities in the region I've never been to, and I want to just because I haven't. |
I'm kind of surprised folks aren't traveling around more, but I realize money is tight and people have work and school schedules to contend with.
When I lived in Boston, my friends and I made a point of visiting NYC every couple of months, and we also visited within about 3 years' time, Montreal, Quebec City, Portland ME, Washington DC, and Philadelphia just for the fuck of it. For some reason we never really stopped in Baltimore. |
I live in Pittsburgh and I go to NYC about once a year, Philly once a year, Cleveland maybe a couple times a year, Buffalo once a year, DC about three times a year and those are about the only cities worth visiting that are semi close. NYC is about 7 hours away and Philly is about 5, DC is only 3.5 hours away.
|
Try to get to San Francisco once or twice a year. Wouldn't mind an annual visit to Seattle & one to Denver. Otherwise, no.

I work two jobs and go to school full time. I barely visit my own city anymore, let alone neighboring ones.

I live in Philadelphia and am in Atlantic City too much

Austin- Several times a year but mostly due to our lake house near Llano. Does stopping on US 71 at H.E.B and Specs count as a visit?
San Antonio- Ditto the Austin. It's really more of a pass through several times a year as we head to the Hill Country/Guadalupe River House that's been in our family for 114 years. New Orleans- At least once a year. DFW- Usually only for sporting events so not as frequent. I grew up driving to Austin/San Antonio/Kerrville so I am very used to those drives. The drive to DFW seems so long and boring by comparison. |
Seattle: 4-5 times per year.
Eugene: 1-2 times per year. Vancouver: 1 time per year. Victoria: Once every 2 years. Spokane: Once every 2 years. San Francisco: 2-3 times per year. Las Vegas: 1 time per year. San Diego: Once every 2 years. Los Angeles: Once every 2 years. New York: 1 time per year. Syracuse: Once every 2 years. |
When I lived in a Boston suburb:
- Providence at least twice a month, usually for food and fun - Portland ME 2-3 times a year, usually for family - NYC once-twice a year, usually baseball-related - SF once-twice a year, always family-related From Tokyo (all work-related): - Seoul twice a month (work position requirement) - Singapore once a month (work position requirement) - Hong Kong 5-6 times a year (work and fun) - Shanghai 2-3 times a year (work) - Beijing 2-3 times a year (kicking and screaming the whole time, for work) - At least once a year, per work contract requirements: Taipei, Sydney, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, Bangkok - Once a year for conferences: Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi, Bali/Denpasar, Phuket From Tokyo (for fun and family): - Osaka 2-3 times a year - Kyoto 2-3 times a year - Sapporo/Niseko 2-3 times a year (snowmobiling) - Naha/Okinawa once a year - Honolulu once a year (wedding anniversary, we haven't missed it yet) |
Seattle–2-3 x/year, just for something different.
Portland–Once a year, not as often since it's farther obviously. Okanagan–Once a year, for the lakes. That's really it as far as regular trips go. I think I've only ever been to Victoria once despite how close it is. As far as other cities we don't go to regularly but have been multiple times: San Francisco–3x. Easily my favourite place I've been in the US. Las Vegas–2x. Self-explanatory. |
I never leave Portland unless its by airplane. i travel within the state, go out to the coast or up to Seattle every once in awhile but going to Salem is a big day trip for me. Portland is pretty isolated. When I lived in the midwest, I always took roadtrips though. From the Detroit area, Toronto, Chicago, Madison, Milwaukie, Cleveland were all fun road trips.....
|
Hmm lets see
Las Vegas about 2 or 3 times a year San Diego about 2 or 3 times a year Palm Springs about 2 or 3 times a year Big Bear 1 or 2 times a year Camping in the Sierras 1 or 2 times a year Mammoth 1 or 2 times a year Boston once every 18 - 24 months to visit family SF once every 2 years or so NYC once every 2 years or so Those are my regular trips. I also like to go on at least 1 international trip a year |
Currently living in Buffalo, so, when on personal trips it's typically:
NYC- 5-6 trips a year, not nearby by my definition, but, I got family there Toronto - 4-5 trips because it close and gives me the "big city" amenities I crave. Pittsburgh- 2-3 trips because my wife is from there Rochester 1-2 its close but not much different from Buffalo . |
I work in Edison so I visit it every weekday, Monday through Friday for 40 hours in total.
Go to Hoboken usually every 3 weeks as a good friend of mine lives there and NYC every two weeks; usually to shop, check real estate, or eat/hit up a bar. Philly usually 7 times a year (Mainly restaurants). I'm usually in NYC. Newark once a month to pick up the rents. Back when I was in University, I use to be in Newark everyday. (RU Newark/NJIT) Although I have traveled more of Europe then the U.S., even though I live here. Been to the caribbean 11 times (11 cruises there) and alaska once (1 cruise). Been to Chicago once, but going back this September! :slob: And lastly Florida, about 4-5 times a year on average. |
