Post your gear thread!

So we obviously have some really talented photographers here on SSP. The eye for photography and control of your camera is of course the most important factor in producing some of these masterpieces but your gear also plays a role.

So what does everybody shoot with? What's your usual walking around kit and what do you store it in?

Tony Oct 22, 2010 11:18 AM

ok, I'll start.

Canon 50D
Canon 17-85mm IS 4-5.6
Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 75-300mm 4-5.6
Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6
Lensbaby 2.0

Canon Speedlight 430EX

Manfrotto 190XDB tripod with 804RC2 Head

Want: a wider angle prime, maybe 24mm, 28mm... undecided.

Don't have any photos online from this camera though.

HomeInMyShoes Oct 22, 2010 5:51 PM

Nikon D90
Tokina 12-24mm F/4
Nikon 50mm F/1.4
Velbon ULTRA LUX i F Tripod

I also use a Canon Powershot SD1100-IS when I'm really lazy.

I usually just carry my camera wrapped in some padding in my totally pretentious Timbuk2 Classic Messenger (small) bag. I had to have one when I found you could build your own. Waterproof lining and just the standard pockets inside. Love that thing. I've got a Tarmac System 3 camera bag for storing longer term, but the camera is pretty much used everyday.

I'd like a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II, but probably not happening anytime soon.

flar Oct 22, 2010 6:30 PM

Nikon D90
Nikon D50 (backup)

Nikon AF-S 16-85mm f/3-5-5.6G ED VR DX (walkaround lens)
Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF DX VR (seldom used)
Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II DX (ghetto lens, for extreme weather and dangerous places)

Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8 G DX (indoors)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Ai-S (with reversing ring for macro)
Nikon 105mm f/2.5 Ai (my goto lens for telephoto and portraits)

Want: nothing really, maybe a decent tripod

Although the 16-85 is a great all purpose lens, I will never buy another lens slower than f/2.8

I was thinking of getting an interchangeable lens camera, but I changed my mind. I need to improve my skillz before I can justify spending hundreds of dollars on equipment. I'll likely just get an IR filter in spring 2011 (do filters count as "gear"?). Maybe a new camera in 2012 or 2013.

The Chemist Nov 11, 2010 12:38 AM

Canon EOS 7D / EF-S 15-85 IS USM
Olympus E500 / ZD 18-180
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5C

I don't like carrying around the bulk of a tripod, so I shoot handheld at night as much as possible - something both the Sony and (especially) the Canon are well capable of as long as the light isn't too low.

I'm in the market for a new camera after my XTi drowned in the San Diego Bay. :haha:

Not sure what I'll get at this point. Most likely I'll wait until I get my tax return in February.

I don't know about that, I've read some pretty poor reviews about that lens ,slow inaccurate focusing are among it's many flaws, it's certainly nowhere as good as the latest model Sigma released last year (selling for about $1500 in MTL) and not in the same league as the mighty nikon 70-200 (selling for about $2,500)

what you have read is correct. there are some issues with the lens which is why i got it for about $400. there have been some af issues. i am probably going to send it to get it serviced by sigma. but it doesnt really focus slow. a better way to describe the issue is that it get hung up while focusing if there is a big difference it the depth that you want to focus on.

i would have loved to buy one of the newer versions because a lot of the bugs have been worked out over the year but i just couldnt afford it.

now if i was a professional i would not have bought this lens due to these issues.

flar Feb 23, 2011 4:28 PM

A lot of the reviews nitpick stuff that doesn't show up in most photos you'll ever take. My brother, who still shoots film, has this old Kiron 80-200mm f4 manual focus. It looks like a piece of crap but I was amazed at the quality of some shots he took of Brian Setzer in concert last year.

unfortunately It always comes down to money doesn't it ? I laugh when I hear people say "to get great shots - it's not the equipment but the person using it that's important"...yeah right I'll pick any smuck at random give him a nikon d3 with a 70-200mm and tell him or her to photograph an event (maybe a protest march) and I'll guarantee they'll come back with at least a dozen top notch photographs..soo much for talent

It's good, nice and light and sharp. But I have upgraded to the Nikkor 105mm VR f/2.8 a couple weeks ago. The AF is faster and focusing is silent.

Whoa whoa whoa man, why the hostility? Calm down. I just copied and pasted this from another forum. Why not display what you used to have? To put it your way, "who cares" if I say what I used to have? Some people may be interested in that. I know I am interested in what other equipment people used to have.

Meh, I guess it came off as arrogant. Almost like adding "filler" to your list.

But, as you stated you just copy & pasted from another forum.

gear makes a huge difference but you have to have the idea first. sure you could stick a moron with a lot of gear and they might come back with some good shots. but stick a real artist behind the lens and it can be magical.

Pope, you/ve always been cool; you didn't need gear to achieve it. However, you made some cool choices.

People express varied opinions about the 18-200mm VR lens. Speaking from experience - I used one on a D200 for a couple of years - I considered mine very useful. It gave me clear, sharp photos in a lot of different lighting situations and working conditions, and in addition to offering convenience, its performance far exceeded what I thought I could expect from such a wide-range zoom.

Colin Giersberg Mar 1, 2011 1:56 AM

Mr. John, if your question is directed at me, it is because I bought my D300 and the 18-200 at the same time. Those were my first Nikon purchases. Since then, I bought the D700, and the other lenses as time and money allowed me to. Ths 35 1.8 was bought before the D700, for what it is worth.

Regards, Colin
